{"id":15758,"date":"2026-05-21T09:37:12","date_gmt":"2026-05-21T09:37:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/15758\/"},"modified":"2026-05-21T09:37:12","modified_gmt":"2026-05-21T09:37:12","slug":"queensland-olympics-minister-tim-mander-stands-down-after-referral-to-afp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/15758\/","title":{"rendered":"Queensland Olympics Minister Tim Mander stands down after referral to AFP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Queensland&#8217;s Olympics Minister Tim Mander has stood aside from cabinet after he was referred to police by the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The AEC confirmed on Thursday it had made the referral to the <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-21\/qld-tim-mander-afp-electoral-enrolment\/106705626\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106705626\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australian Federal Police (AFP) amid questions about his enrolment status.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In a statement released late Thursday, Mr Mander said he had told Premier David Crisafulli he was &#8220;standing aside&#8221; while the matter was sorted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I referred this matter [to the AEC] myself and provided information as requested, so it could be proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that I have followed the right processes and all appropriate declarations and disclosures have been made,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I have total confidence this will be resolved and Labor&#8217;s attacks disproved, however, I have no intention of this becoming a distraction to the important work of the government.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Crisafulli said he was made aware of the AEC&#8217;s advice at lunch time, and had accepted Mr Mander&#8217;s decision to step aside.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Mander&#8217;s annual salary will be slashed from $390,000 to about $190,000.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"David Crisafulli stands to the side at looks at Tim Mander as he speaks at a press conference.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/6e73a146c3496b64f60837f490a90d93.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">David Crisafulli says he accepted Tim Mander&#8217;s decision to step aside. (ABC News: Alex Brewster)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Tourism Minister Andrew Powell will now administer Mr Mander&#8217;s portfolio responsibilities, which include sport and the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The AFP has confirmed it received a &#8220;report of a crime&#8221; from the AEC on Tuesday \u2014 and said it would provide an update at an appropriate time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Earlier, the AEC had released a statement, saying it had sought information from Mr Mander about the enrolment matter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">This included an opportunity for the minister to provide information to the election watchdog to support his enrolment claims.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;While a determination has not been made, the AEC does consider that there is currently an absence of compelling evidence to determine Mr Mander resided at the enrolled address,&#8221; a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;As such, on 19 May the AEC referred this matter to the AFP for their consideration, and any action they consider appropriate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Tim Mander sign outside office\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1779356232_511_4ff273f703975d29178411a99201880b.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Tim Mander is the state member for Everton.
