Nothing came.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He moved down the hallway toward the bedroom, each step carrying him closer to a scene of almost incomprehensible brutality that would split his life into before and after.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dawn&#8217;s near-naked, mutilated body was sprawled across the double bed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She wore only a blouse, a broken brassiere and long, woollen socks. Young people were pushing back against that and Dawn was one of them,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She worked as a secretary at Pine Rivers Council and met Philip through the Pine Rivers Young Liberals branch. (Supplied: Jack Sim)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">At the time, police declared the murder was the work of a &#8220;frenzied maniac.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But they were hampered by a lack of forensic evidence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The knife was scientifically examined but yielded no fingerprints. There were no signs of forced entry. It doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean she knew them,&#8221; Mr Sim said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Four days after Dawn&#8217;s death, Philip made a desperate public plea \u2014 penning a letter to The Courier Mail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Please help me find the person who took Dawn&#8217;s life,&#8221; Philip wrote.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My life is worth nothing without her \u2026 please, I beg of you if you phone up, please give your name. (Supplied: Jack Sim)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Detectives worked outward from Dawn&#8217;s immediate circle, scrutinising colleagues at Pine Rivers Council, along with associates from the Young Liberals movement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">They even traced contacts back to her earlier life in the UK, attempting to build a complete picture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Early suspicion fell on Philip, but he was quickly ruled out \u2014 confirmed by witnesses to have been at university classes at the time of Dawn&#8217;s murder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">One potential suspect stood out. A man of wiry build, aged between 24 and 25, with brown hair and a &#8216;sleeper&#8217; earring. The court heard Mr Hillier had undergone a vasectomy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The inquest was told Dawn&#8217;s father had seen a friend on the night of the murder, though accounts of his movements were inconsistent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A sergeant assisting the coroner submitted that there was sufficient evidence to try Mr Hillier for murder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">With no clear motive, acting coroner Mr Randall ultimately ruled the threshold for prosecution had not been met and closed the inquest without committal.<\/p>\n<p>No answers<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Advances in forensic science have transformed countless cold cases.
