{"id":18579,"date":"2026-05-26T04:10:43","date_gmt":"2026-05-26T04:10:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/18579\/"},"modified":"2026-05-26T04:10:43","modified_gmt":"2026-05-26T04:10:43","slug":"inside-the-vaults-of-australias-legal-mdma-and-psilocybin-magic-mushroom-trade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/18579\/","title":{"rendered":"Inside the vaults of Australia&#8217;s legal MDMA and psilocybin magic mushroom trade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">For decades, MDMA, also known as ecstasy or molly, has been traded underground and illegally ingested in the shadows of parties and nightclubs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It is a hard drug known for its euphoric high, and side effects can be fatal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Possessing or selling the drug can lead to jail time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But at a manufacturing hub in Brisbane, MDMA is being packed into capsules for hospitals and clinics across the country.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/14408dc4df604935cee1dac9d656a44b.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It isn&#8217;t the only drug processed at the lab.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Bags of mushrooms will be weighed before the active ingredient inside, known as psilocybin, is extracted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">On the black market they are known as magic mushrooms and are sold for their hallucinogenic effects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But in this facility, they have a therapeutic use.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/4c984fe873524f8697992189b5534b67.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The business manufacturing these drugs is Breathe Life Sciences, granted one of the highly regulated licences to work with these drugs in Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">For the first time, the ABC can take you behind the scenes of its production line, inside the vaults, and all the way to the patients in therapy.<\/p>\n<p>Australia rides wave of psychedelic medicine<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Sam Watson stands in a vault with bags of cannabis \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/6a640fe977091432f3635fa0ceb26948.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/> Sam Watson was granted a licence to manufacture MDMA and psylocibin about two years ago.(ABC News: Adelaide Miller)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It was just over two years ago when chief executive Sam Watson said his company was given the green light to start manufacturing both MDMA and psilocybin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Up until this point, Breathe Life Sciences was focused solely on medicinal cannabis.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A production line of legal bright pink cannabis gummies\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/f239d47d75a0aff897c7457be1522b97.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/> Prior to 2023, Breathe Life Sciences solely manufactured medicinal cannabis.\u00a0(ABC News: Adelaide Miller)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But in 2023, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-02-03\/tga-approves-psilocybin-mdma-for-treating-depression-ptsd\/101929578\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/101929578\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australia changed its laws<\/a>, becoming the first country to allow authorised psychiatrists to prescribe MDMA for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and psilocybin for treatment-resistant depression.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;For us and for any business trying to operate in this space, it&#8217;s obviously a challenge,&#8221; environment and are stored in a separate, smaller vault, which can only be accessed by select staff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Some of the drugs are grown in Australia, while others arrive from overseas, but all go through rigorous testing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Before we buy it, bring it into our site, it&#8217;s tested. When it arrives to our site, it&#8217;s tested in its raw form. I was like, I don&#8217;t know what MDMA is going to do to help fix the situation that I&#8217;m in but I guess I&#8217;ll give it a go. she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;When that&#8217;s turned off, then people are actually able to think about and consider and look at material that&#8217;s normally really painful or frightening or really difficult to look at.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Woman in green dress smiles at camera while leaning on wall in clinic.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/d09866d6101784710fb16cffc1d3ba17.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/> Danielle Desforges says MDMA therapy turns down the amygdala, which sets off your fight\u2013flight system.(ABC News: Mitchell Edgar)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She says she&#8217;s seen the impact firsthand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve had clients who&#8217;ve had trauma all of their lives and have not been able to shift the trauma for years, and they&#8217;ve come to have MDMA-assisted therapy and it has been life-changing for them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But it comes at a cost.<\/p>\n<p>Treatments not suitable for everyone<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">At the Empax Centre, the MDMA treatment costs about $30,000 and the psilocybin therapy costs about $20,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In June last year, Medibank private became the first health insurer to fund psychotherapy as part of its $50 million mental health commitment, something Jess Yugovich accessed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Medibank&#8217;s chief medical officer and practising psychiatrist Andrew Wilson said in a statement: &#8220;For many people, the current system is not working for them and is creating more problems for our stretched health system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Unless treated effectively, mental ill-health is a major cause of premature death and disability.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Department of Veterans&#8217; Professor Guastella says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Longer term, there are reports of more significant side effects around hallucinogenic experiences that happen in a small number of people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We know for MDMA \u2026 having serious cardiac issues is a contraindication to receiving it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If people are taking antidepressants and then they take some of these drugs, they can have very, very serious side effects.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Professor Guastella says it&#8217;s important to separate the illicit drug from the drug taken in the therapy room.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;When you access them on the street they are dangerous, maybe not because of the active ingredient or maybe it&#8217;s the way that it&#8217;s been taken or the dose that&#8217;s been taken.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Under good regulation \u2026 it&#8217;s vastly different. The amount of appropriate regulation, safety procedures placed around the therapy really reduces the risk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The risk isn&#8217;t zero but it reduces the risk dramatically.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Early days for legal market<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Despite the regulation and safety procedures, some warn it&#8217;s still too early to tell what the future of this market will look like.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;New technologies, whether they&#8217;re medical technologies or something else, are always super exciting, right?
