{"id":18962,"date":"2026-05-26T19:39:07","date_gmt":"2026-05-26T19:39:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/18962\/"},"modified":"2026-05-26T19:39:07","modified_gmt":"2026-05-26T19:39:07","slug":"reception-hours-slashed-at-police-stations-in-melbournes-outer-north","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/18962\/","title":{"rendered":"Reception hours slashed at police stations in Melbourne&#8217;s outer-north"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Victoria Police is defending a decision to cut the hours police stations are open to the public in Melbourne&#8217;s booming outer north, arguing the move will mean more police on the road.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">From this weekend, reception counter hours at Mernda, Mill Park, Whittlesea and Epping police stations will be reduced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">At Mernda, the move will see the police station reception counter cut from five days a week to just two.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In a statement, a Victoria Police spokesperson said the police stations will not be closing, with officers still working there, just not at the counter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;These changes will not impact the 24\/7 response we provide \u2014 in fact, it will boost it by adding extra police vehicles on the road when the community need us the most,&#8221; the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">They said police officers taken from admin duties were able to boost proactive operations in the community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;This includes Operation Plaza, which sees police patrol Epping Plaza, Uni Hill Bundoora and Westfield Plenty Valley to engage with retailers and ensure public order,&#8221; they said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We have also been running Operation Renegade at Mernda train station alongside Protective Services Officers to deter anti-social behaviour and boost commuter safety.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In March, 22-year-old Aiden Becker was <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-03-07\/four-arrested-over-death-of-man-in-mernda-railway-station-fight\/106427586\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106427586\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">allegedly murdered at Mernda station<\/a> while trying to protect a 14-year-old boy.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Two Victoria Police vehicles on the road.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/0b50429f911e857199750b7f33952f88.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The Police Association says the decision highlights a lack of police in the state. (ABC News: Danielle Bonica)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Police Association Victoria secretary Wayne Gatt said the reduction in hours was disappointing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;This highlights the desperate situation we have been confronting for some time in regards to the severe lack of police we have in Victoria,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Tax-paying Victorians and Victorian families deserve a full-time police force, not a part-time one.
