{"id":22113,"date":"2026-06-01T00:49:08","date_gmt":"2026-06-01T00:49:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/22113\/"},"modified":"2026-06-01T00:49:08","modified_gmt":"2026-06-01T00:49:08","slug":"large-flock-of-critically-endangered-swift-parrots-seen-near-port-macquarie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/22113\/","title":{"rendered":"Large flock of critically endangered swift parrots seen near Port Macquarie"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Avid birdwatcher, James Bennett, was out looking for a rare bird recently near Port Macquarie when he heard a distinctive call that piqued his excitement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;For the last month or so, I have been checking areas for swift parrots, which are a winter migrant \u2026 some years they miss these spots, but it&#8217;s always worth checking,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It was flogging down with rain, and I had the windows down in the car listening for their call \u2026 it&#8217;s a very distinctive call, and when you hear it, you know.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Bennett alerted other birdwatchers and they recorded not just one or two, but a large flock of about 50 birds at Lake Cathie, south of Port Macquarie, on the New South Wales Mid North Coast.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A bright green and red parrot in flight in the blue, cloudless sky.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1617cfecfc248acd2b9cdd55aa291548.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Swift parrots migrate from Tasmania to the mainland during the cooler months. (Supplied: James Bennett)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It is a significant sighting of a species, which conservationists estimate is down to between 750 to 1,500 birds in the wild.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Swift parrots breed in Tasmania during the summer before migrating to the mainland in search of food in the cooler months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Last year, hardly any were seen in NSW.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Whenever you spot one \u2026 it&#8217;s pretty special, your stomach drops, and you get pretty excited,&#8221;  Mr Bennett said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They really are an incredible looking bird with their bright scarlet coloured face, long pointed tail and very unique call and feeding antics.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"James standing next to a sign in a national park, wearing camouflage gear, smiles, looks away to the trees.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/b2f9fdf47e67bb32315649e28cc04b34.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">James Bennett says he spends much of his time out searching for rare bird species. (Supplied: James Bennett)<\/p>\n<p>Significant northern sightings<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">BirdLife Australia&#8217;s regent honeyeater recovery advisor, Mick Roderick, said the sighting was encouraging after last year, when most of the swift parrot population did not migrate further north than Victoria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said in addition to the 50 recorded around Lake Cathie, there had been recent reports of swift parrots elsewhere on the Mid North Coast, including 10 at Crescent Head.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A bright green parrot hanging onto leaves in a gum tree.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/d284b63e84e3fc2c4f15df6d04fe32e8.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Swift parrots migrate north in search of food, this one seen with a large flock at Lake Cathie. (Supplied: James Bennett)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Roderick said it indicated food sources were probably more favourable in NSW than Victoria this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Because we are seeing so many, so early, this year in NSW \u2014 and two birds in Brisbane \u2014 it really does suggest their food sources in Victoria are nowhere near as good as they were last year,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It really points to the importance of having many options for swift parrots.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Having the intact forests around the NSW Mid North Coast is a very important thing for migrants and nomadic nectar feeding birds like swift parrots.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Roderick said &#8220;swifties&#8221; were relatively fussy eaters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Similar to [critically endangered] regent honeyeaters, they tend to go for the really high-quality food sources, whether it&#8217;s a blossom source, or lerp,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Lerp is a sugary protective casing around psyllids, which are tiny insects that feed on the leaves of native trees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s like a little umbrella the psyllids cover themselves with to protect themselves from prey,&#8221; Mr Roderick said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;But birds have learnt that it is actually a nice, sugary and carbohydrate-rich food source.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Threats remain<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A swift parrot perching on a branch, background is blurred.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/3373e18c95f2cd3cdfb10e1ffb650861.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Swift parrots are known to be fussy eaters. (Supplied: Chris Tzaros)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Roderick said there was a <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-07-18\/massive-flock-of-critically-endangered-swift-parrots-sighted\/105535670\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105535670\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">flock of nearly 700 swift parrots around Bendigo<\/a> in Victoria last year, which was an encouraging sighting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But he said significant threats remained, including habitat loss and predation, primarily by the sugar glider.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Australian National University leads a team of conservation biologists working with the swift parrot to try and boost its numbers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They [swift parrots] are probably doing better than we thought maybe five years ago \u2026 it&#8217;s difficult to say there&#8217;s evidence of recovery, there might be a few more birds, but that&#8217;s about it,&#8221; Mr Roderick said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A regent honeyeater, black and gold coloured, sitting on a tree branch.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/6d758bfabb3ece6e02a3714503289c32.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Richard Shaw says he captured this image of a regent honeyeater at Lake Cathie earlier this year.
