{"id":22197,"date":"2026-06-01T02:30:11","date_gmt":"2026-06-01T02:30:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/22197\/"},"modified":"2026-06-01T02:30:11","modified_gmt":"2026-06-01T02:30:11","slug":"tasmanian-premier-jeremy-rockliff-faces-estimates-scrutiny-after-resignation-of-minister-madeleine-ogilvie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/22197\/","title":{"rendered":"Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff faces estimates scrutiny after resignation of minister Madeleine Ogilvie"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff has refused to provide any information about cabinet&#8217;s decision to pay for Liberal MP Madeleine Ogilvie&#8217;s legal fees, on the basis of legal confidentiality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Ogilvie was accused of misleading parliament after she first told an estimates committee in November that she was not a party to any Supreme Court proceedings, but then <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-28\/tasmanian-greens-madeleine-ogilvie-resignation-legal-action\/106732732\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106732732\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">last week revealed in parliament she was in fact involved in Supreme Court matters she initiated<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\"><a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-30\/madeleine-ogilvie-backbench-accusations-of-misleading-parliament\/106741156\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106741156\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">She resigned as a minister on Saturday evening<\/a>, saying she did not want the government to be &#8220;distracted by this matter&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But the Greens \u2014 who asked the question that started the saga \u2014 and Labor say the premier has questions to answer, like what he knew and when.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In estimates on Monday, the premier was repeatedly asked questions by the leaders of both parties, but he offered little beyond the fact the matters were complex, &#8220;particularly given the confidentiality requirements&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He also said Ms Ogilvie would reveal the full details when she could.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Labor leader Josh Willie: When did you authorise Supreme Court proceedings? You would&#8217;ve had to approve it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Rockliff: I am not commenting any further. It&#8217;s a legal matter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Willie: This is about what you knew \u2026 this is about you and what you knew at what time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Rockliff: This is about complying with the law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Willie: No, when did you approve the legal fees?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Rockliff: I&#8217;m sorry, I&#8217;ve said my answer. You can ask it in 50 different ways. (ABC News: Simon Farrell)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Rockliff told the committee the legal proceedings are ongoing and full details will be provided once legally possible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But the Greens leader was unsatisfied, arguing the government should offer up details like dates and times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Ogilvie will not have to front up to estimates as she is no longer a minister. Treasurer Eric Abetz will instead step in to front the committees scrutinising her portfolio areas.<\/p>\n<p>Will a former minister return to the frontbench?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Ogilvie held multiple portfolios, including environment, innovation, science and the digital economy, community and multicultural affairs, and arts and heritage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Treasurer Eric Abetz will take questions on the portfolio areas held by Ms Ogilvie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">As for who will replace her as minister, a government spokesperson said there would be &#8220;more to say on new ministerial announcements&#8221; later in the week.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-31\/madeleine-ogilvie-resignation-analysis\/106742034\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The end came quickly for Madeleine Ogilvie, who jumped before being pushed<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">It started with a seemingly innocuous question. Over the course of several months, Madeleine Ogilvie had many opportunities to provide clarification, but didn&#8217;t until last week.
