(ABC Riverina: Nicola Ceccato)

Narrandera Mayor Neville Kschenka said the decades-long water quality crisis was getting worse, but the council could not afford a treatment plant to fix the problem.

“Residents are continually asking us what we can do about it, and quite frankly, [we need] about $32 million, and our rate payers just can’t afford that,” he said.

The NSW government said last year it would provide $1 million to complete a business case for a water treatment plant, and almost $215,000 to carry out preliminary investigations.

The state’s water minister, Rose Jackson, said at the time that the government was “in direct contact with council to get a better understanding of what an interim solution could look like”.

“We are continuing to provide expert advice and technical support to ensure the community is supplied with water that meets Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.”

Steph Cooke says there needs to be an “interim solution”
