Warning AUKUS risks being derailed, the House of Commons report says building the nuclear-powered submarines in partnership with Australia \u201cwill undoubtedly stretch the UK\u2019s defence industrial capacity\u201d and \u201ctimely investment\u201d in key British shipyards \u201cis critical\u201d.<\/p>\n
But the report says creating a new submarine yard at Osborne, in Adelaide\u2019s northwest, \u201cis on a different scale\u201d and the UK\u2019s defence ministry \u201crecognised the enormity of this challenge\u201d.<\/p>\n
Responding to the report, Mr Marles said Australia was \u201creally comfortable\u201d with the UK\u2019s contribution to AUKUS, which includes building the first future submarine at BAE Systems\u2019 Barrow-in-Furness shipyard.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are on track to deliver AUKUS in terms of all of its milestones, and that includes the construction of the submarine yard at the Osborne Naval Shipyard<\/a>, where we will be building SSN-AUKUS with BAE Systems,\u201d Mr Marles said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re very confident about that, and we\u2019re very confident about the role that the UK is playing.\u201d<\/p>\n The UK report warned \u201cthe scale and ambition of AUKUS means that it needs visible political leadership from the Prime Minister (Sir Keir Starmer) to counter the political drift that could see it derailed\u201d.<\/p>\n But Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said there was \u201csupport overwhelmingly from the British government, from Prime Minister Keir Starmer down\u201d, along with UK defence personnel.<\/p>\n \u201cAUKUS is, to quote President Trump, full steam ahead.
