Parks Australia has announced popular Kakadu attractions Jim Jim Falls and Twin Falls will remain closed for the rest of this year, including through the Top End’s peak tourism season, as repairs to cyclone-damaged roads are carried out.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In a statement, Director of National Parks Ricky Archer said the decision had been made following engagement with Kakadu’s traditional owners to allow for “critical road and infrastructure upgrades”.<\/p>\n

“Traditional owners expressed their concerns for the safety of visitors to their country and have requested that the area remain closed until all road upgrade projects are completed,” he said.<\/p>\n

“Parks Australia respects and supports this decision.”<\/p>\n

The closure includes the Twin Falls gorge and escarpment walk and Karnamarr campground, with upgrade works scheduled to start later this month and be completed by December.<\/p>\n

Almost 20 kilometres of the Jim Jim Falls Road will be upgraded “to gravel standard” to boost safety and amenity, along with improvements to four-wheel-drive tracks.<\/p>\n

Mr Archer said decisions about visitor access and infrastructure in the park were made in partnership with traditional owners to protect cultural values and Kakadu’s “unique natural and cultural heritage”.<\/p>\n

“Importantly, Kakadu remains open, and visitors can continue to experience many of the park’s iconic cultural and natural attractions while these essential works are completed,” he said.<\/p>\n

Never Never Safari Tours owner Sean “Chizo” Chisholm, whose business operates four-wheel drive tours to Jim Jim Falls, said while “the road can be pretty hectic” and was in need of “a good makeover”, it was disappointing the works had not been completed earlier.<\/p>\n

“I fully respect the traditional owners and understand the safety for guests and tourists and accessibility for our guides and cars,” he told ABC Radio Darwin.<\/p>\n

“[But] we haven’t had rain for nearly three months and I can’t see why they couldn’t have gotten that done a little bit quicker.”<\/p>\n

Mr Chisholm said the closure would make a tough dry season, in which his bookings were already down 70 per cent, even tougher.<\/p>\n

“I heard rumours and I thought ‘they can’t’, but it has happened, and now it’s just totally changed the whole ball game for the season,” he said.<\/p>\n

“It’s going to be a very tough year so I’m trying to think of other avenues, like different tours that we could do with ones that are open, which are supposed to be towards the end of June.<\/p>\n
