or zombie-like appearance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It is thought the infection has been spread through mosquitos, or through possums after they have been bitten by the insect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Patients include Jan Smith, who contracted the ulcer on her left foot while training to climb a mountain Alaska.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;It just kept getting bigger and bigger,&#8221; she told <a aria-label=\"theage.comLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/victoria\/flesheating-buruli-ulcer-cases-soar-as-disease-spreads-to-melbourne-20160804-gqksnw.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">theage.com<\/a> . &#8220;It was bright red [and] like a sock full of fluid.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;I couldn&#8217;t sleep for the pain,&#8221; But maybe possums are just victims of it, like humans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The Bairnsdale ulcer, also known at the Buruli ulcer, can also affect bones if it worsens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It often erupts on the elbow, back, calf or ankle about four months after a person has been bitten but is easily treated if caught early.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Illustration of a Buruli tropical climates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWe still don\u2019t understand why people get it and exactly how to stop it, and how to stop it moving around,\u201d Prof Johnson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIt starts as something strange and innocuous but it gradually gets bigger and looks like a small volcano on your skin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIt gradually swells and hollows out and discharges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img gangrene, the death and decomposition of body tissue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Other cases have been recorded in Nigeria, Mali and other west African countries, with Australia as the only developed country to have an outbreak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In three years the number of cases have doubled as 106 cases were recorded in 2015 compared to the 65 in 2013.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">There have already been 45 cases recorded this year in Victoria alone.<\/p>\n<p><img chief health officer for Victoria Professor Charles Guest said the bug remained a \u201cconcern\u201d in the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cEveryone is susceptible to infection,\u201d the warning states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cAlthough the source of the infection is unknown, this environmental organism appears to be associated with swampy or
