(ABC News: Lincoln Rothall)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-03-04\/sa-paedophile-magistrate-peter-liddy-detention\/106413360\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106413360\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the government was pursuing its applications to have Liddy indefinitely detained, or placed on an extended supervision order<\/a> with &#8220;exceptionally&#8221; strict conditions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As a government we are doing everything in our legal power to have Peter LIddy returned to jail,&#8221;  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;In the alternative, if that&#8217;s not granted by the court, we have made an application \u2014 and we will be pursuing it \u2014 to have those strict conditions continue to apply.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;High position of trust&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Liddy was sentenced in September 2001, and was initially housed in high security at Yatala Labour Prison, before being moved to Mount Gambier Prison in 2011.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">His 25-year head sentence was understood to be the longest jail term imposed on a paedophile at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Liddy became eligible to apply for parole in 2019, but it has never been granted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He was <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-08-13\/paedophile-peter-liddy-applies-for-parole\/11410986\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/11410986\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the state&#8217;s longest-serving magistrate<\/a>, having also spent 25 years after being appointed to the bench when he was aged about 29.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In sentencing, then-Supreme Court Justice Margaret Nyland said Liddy &#8220;occupied a high position of trust&#8221; at the time of his offending, which made his crimes &#8220;particularly serious&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The community is entitled to expect the holder of such a responsible position to be vigilant in the care and protection of their children,&#8221; she said a the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Instead, you chose to exploit this important and in many ways privileged position.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In 2010, a second set of offences, allegedly involving an additional 10 child sex charges relating to five other victims between between 1969 and 1983 was\u00a0<a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2010-06-18\/new-liddy-sex-charges-thrown-out\/872134\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/872134\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">thrown out of court.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Peter Liddy\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/3b035e797114a8b52760029adff9eea7.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Peter Liddy was a serving magistrate at the time of his crimes.
