{"id":25833,"date":"2026-06-06T05:16:11","date_gmt":"2026-06-06T05:16:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/25833\/"},"modified":"2026-06-06T05:16:11","modified_gmt":"2026-06-06T05:16:11","slug":"australia-nz-relationship-should-never-be-taken-for-granted-christopher-luxon-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/25833\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia-NZ relationship should &#8216;never be taken for granted&#8217;, Christopher Luxon says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/4K2XI30_IMG_9621_jpeg.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"700\" alt=\"Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has meeting his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese in Queenstown.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nPrime Minister Christopher Luxon (R) with his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese in Queenstown in 2025.<br \/>\nPhoto: RNZ\/Katie Todd\n<\/p>\n<p>Anthony Albanese says New Zealand and Australia are more than just neighbours, they&#8217;re &#8220;family&#8221; and Christopher Luxon says the relationship should &#8220;never be taken for granted&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian and New Zealand prime ministers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/political\/597284\/christopher-luxon-heads-to-australia-for-annual-meeting-with-anthony-albanese\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">met on Friday night<\/a> in Noosa ahead of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/political\/597250\/luxon-heads-to-australia-for-annual-talks-with-anthony-albanese\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">annual leader&#8217;s meeting<\/a> taking place on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Albanese discussed advancing the economic relationship between the two countries, in order to make it &#8220;seamless&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He also discussed the need to work together in a &#8220;volatile world&#8221;, where a war neither of them were part of was still having an impact.<\/p>\n<p>Albanese said norms such as trade being a good thing, or that globalisation brought benefits and people out of poverty, couldn&#8217;t be taken for granted anymore.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need to work on them, and we need to work together.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Luxon said the world was at an &#8220;inflection point&#8221;, and moving from one ordered by rules to one ordered by power.<\/p>\n<p>He said it was an opportunity for two countries &#8220;like us&#8221; working so closely together with other like-minded countries.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are in a place where we are strategically aligned, we have very good alignment on our values, and very good alignment on our interests.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Luxon said the relationship was one of family and therefore &#8220;we should never take it for granted&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/radionz.us6.list-manage.com\/subscribe?u=211a938dcf3e634ba2427dde9&amp;id=b3d362e693\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up for Ng\u0101 Pitopito K\u014drero<\/a>, a daily newsletter curated by our editors and delivered straight to your inbox every weekday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Prime Minister Christopher Luxon (R) with his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese in Queenstown in 2025.
