{"id":26238,"date":"2026-06-07T02:02:30","date_gmt":"2026-06-07T02:02:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/26238\/"},"modified":"2026-06-07T02:02:30","modified_gmt":"2026-06-07T02:02:30","slug":"gst-push-to-follow-sa-budget-treasurer-says-but-opposition-wants-it-spent-on-debt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/26238\/","title":{"rendered":"GST push to follow SA budget, treasurer says \u2014 but opposition wants it spent on debt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A day after the South Australian budget, Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis has foreshadowed a push to secure the state&#8217;s share of GST revenue over the long term, calling on MPs across the political spectrum to step up advocacy efforts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But the opposition has criticised the way in which GST money is being used, saying the government should be putting it aside to counter soaring debt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">GST is set to account for around <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-05\/tom-koutsantonis-sa-budget-analysis\/106759752\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106759752\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">30 per cent of the state&#8217;s revenue next financial year<\/a>, but the federal government&#8217;s &#8220;no worse off&#8221; guarantee to compensate other states for <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-24\/australia-gst-review-under-review-wa-gst-deal\/105813372\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Western Australia&#8217;s favourable share is set to expire in 2030<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-04\/sa-government-hands-down-2026-budget\/106758380\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SA government hands down 2026 budget<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The SA government has handed down its first budget since winning the March election in a landslide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">According to the budget papers, South Australia will benefit from a &#8220;stronger national GST pool&#8221; over the next three years, with GST grant revenue forecasts revised up since the mid-year budget review by $794 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But the picture is different on a proportional basis, with the budget forecasting SA will receive &#8220;around 9.8 per cent&#8221; of the total GST pool in the next financial year \u2014 &#8220;a lower share to that received in 2025-26&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The treasurer said the government would be pushing &#8220;very hard&#8221; to secure the state&#8217;s slice of GST revenue, and urged his political rivals in SA to do the same.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve seen a lot of advocacy from Western Australia and Western Australian MPs about the importance of GST to Western Australia,&#8221; Mr Koutsantonis said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Well, it&#8217;s important to South Australia too \u2014 it&#8217;s important to Victoria, it&#8217;s important to New South Wales. (ABC News: Che Chorley)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Asked whether the government would launch a campaign for GST revenue, Mr Koutsantonis replied: &#8220;You&#8217;ll be seeing more about that in the coming days and weeks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The state&#8217;s net debt is expected to hit $53.6 billion by 2029-30 \u2014 a figure the government said was being driven by its &#8220;large capital program&#8221; including the North-South Corridor and the new Women&#8217;s and Children&#8217;s Hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But the opposition said debt was out of control and that the current figure did not include the full cost of the hospital, the $3.2 billion current price tag of which has been tipped to blow out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;[We&#8217;ve] seen a $700 million GST revenue windfall above forecasts \u2014 we haven&#8217;t seen that being applied to budget repair, we haven&#8217;t seen that banked to ensure that this debt can start to be ticked down,&#8221; Shadow Treasurer Ben Hood said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Shadow Treasurer Ben Hood \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/0393e79c208bb66560bb526de6dc7c2e.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Shadow Treasurer Ben Hood says GST revenue should be used to help pay off debt.
