{"id":2727,"date":"2026-05-01T06:32:09","date_gmt":"2026-05-01T06:32:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/2727\/"},"modified":"2026-05-01T06:32:09","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T06:32:09","slug":"city-of-mandurah-removes-dead-whale-from-florida-beach-after-shark-feeding-frenzy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/2727\/","title":{"rendered":"City of Mandurah removes dead whale from Florida Beach after shark feeding frenzy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">A dead whale that floated to shore off the coast south of Mandurah has been removed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Authorities were notified to sharks feeding off the carcass about 1km off the Dawesville Cut and issued an alert on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Extraordinary footage of a 3m tiger shark taking bites out of the whale stunned social media users when it was posted to a local community Facebook page.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">By the afternoon, the whale had washed up on Florida Beach south of the cut.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Based on its size the whale was believed to be a juvenile humpback.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The City of Mandurah removed the whale on Thursday but shark alerts are still in place.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/6aebd757bd5e4249b7d3f141ca62862518f8b7a7.jpg\" alt=\"The whale washed ashore at Florida Beach.\" class=\"css-16r7l45-StyledImage en5ut4d0\"\/>Camera IconThe whale washed ashore at Florida Beach. Photography<\/a> was lucky enough to capture still photos of the whale on the shore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">A City of Mandurah spokesperson said a specialist contractor wrapped and loaded the whale carcass on a truck and transported it to Dardanup Landfill for disposal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The beach is currently still closed and will be reopened once it\u2019s safe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The beach is just minutes from Pyramid Beach, where 15-year-old local surfer Zac Hlaing was bitten on the foot by a shark in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Just a few kilometres north is where surfer Ben Gerring, 29, lost his life after a shark attack at Gearies Beach almost a decade ago.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A dead whale that floated to shore off the coast south of Mandurah has been removed.
