(ABC News: Che Chorley)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;A lot of the individuals I came across throughout the process they genuinely cared about achieving accountability for the harm that was committed,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;But my broader experience of navigating the justice system was extremely traumatising.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s a huge misalignment in so many of the systems about what modern slavery can look like in Australia.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The report drew on transcripts from 34 people with lived experience of modern slavery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">An unidentified victim-survivor told the report&#8217;s researchers that when they made two calls to the AFP, they felt the frontline team was &#8220;not trained to take reports of modern slavery&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The AFP hold primary responsibility for investigating suspected modern slavery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They didn&#8217;t really know what I was talking about. (ABC News: Abubakr Sajid)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Some other victim-survivors interviewed for the report said they had more positive experiences when reporting to AFP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Another lived experience advocate said no one informed them they were eligible to access financial assistance through the victim support scheme.<\/p>\n<p>Commissioner calls for change<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The report called for police and prosecutors to critically assess the effectiveness of current systems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Australian Anti-Slavery Commissioner, Chris Evans, said too many cases &#8220;fail to deliver accountability for offenders&#8221; and fail to support victim-survivors.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Everyone in the system is trying to do their best, but it&#8217;s just not working,&#8221;  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The cases taken to trial are just a small fraction of the number of offences occurring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Often we see people charged for lesser offences than what is clearly modern slavery because the prosecutors decide they&#8217;re just not capable of getting a conviction on the stronger charges.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Australian anti-slavery commissioner Chris Evans\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/0423d25e6ba91f1d7f0cc6b9cd277dbb.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Chris Evans encouraged Australia&#8217;s police and law bodies to assess the effectiveness of current systems for identifying and investigating modern slavery. (ABC News: Billy Draper)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The federal government is preparing for its next national strategy to address modern slavery, with consultation to take place later this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The report also came following the announcement the United States was planning to impose a 12.5 per cent tariff on goods from Australia, <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-04\/us-plans-to-impose-anti-slavery-tariff-on-australian-products\/106757472\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">alleging the country has failed to take action to prevent slavery and forced labour<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;What we want to do is get the focus on the victims,&#8221; Mr Evans said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-01-09\/what-is-modern-slavery-nsw-migrant-workers-commissioner\/104589016\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Moe Turaga came to Australia for a better life. Two years into his work, Mr Turaga discovered he had not been paid a cent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve got to make sure their voices are heard, and that way we&#8217;ll be much more likely to be able to devise systems that deliver results that all Australians would expect.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Emma hoped that, with systemic change, other victim-survivors would then be able to lean on the justice system to identity, and respond proactively to forms of modern slavery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Experiences like this change the way you move around the world. I still carry a lot of hyper-vigilance and fear,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I want to use my experience to help shift the conversation about exploitation.
