That&#8217;s terrible conditions, that is inhumane and degrading conditions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-06-26\/up-to-four-inmates-crammed-into-one-cell-in-wa-prisons\/105461438\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Up to four inmates being crammed into a cell in WA prisons<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">As figures shown in parliament outline the level of overcrowding in Western Australia&#8217;s prisons, the Justice Department says increased family and domestic violence charges are a factor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;People shouldn&#8217;t be held in those conditions and today we have 120 people in the prison system who are sleeping in that kind of arrangement.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The long-term problem for the state, he said, was that those people were not being rehabilitated in the way they should.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;If you release them from prison and you have treated them badly and you haven&#8217;t given them any sort of rehabilitation, they&#8217;re going to be worse,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;And they&#8217;re going to be standing next to you at the football, sitting next to you at the movie theatre or at the restaurant.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Opposition Leader Basil Zempilas said West Australians had cause to be horrified and alarmed over Mr Ryan&#8217;s findings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;What is this government doing about it? How can this government let it get to this and when will the conditions inside and for those people outside be taken into account by this state government?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Comprehensive plan needed<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Ryan&#8217;s one recommendation was for the Justice Department to develop and release a &#8220;comprehensive, costed reform implementation plan&#8221; with short, medium and long-term plans and a &#8220;clear and time-bound implementation schedule&#8221; for each.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-07-22\/conditions-in-hakea-prison-breaches-international-human-rights\/105556906\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Conditions in prison don&#8217;t meet &#8216;basic level of decent treatment&#8217;<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">WA&#8217;s Inspector of Custodial Services finds conditions in the maximum security Hakea Prison are continuing to breach national and international human rights standards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said the recommendation was aimed at &#8220;large scale strategic reform&#8221;, which should address the causes of people being sent to prison, how they&#8217;re rehabilitated and support systems upon their release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The department noted the recommendation, saying it was for the government to consider.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In a statement, it said two teams had been developed to manage prisoner populations, including &#8220;risk management&#8221; and there was a &#8220;sustained recruitment program&#8221; to grow prison officer numbers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Through strengthened governance, targeted interventions and sustained investment in our workforce and infrastructure, we are making Hakea, Casuarina and Melaleuca safer and more resilient,&#8221;
