A Western Australian couple expecting triplets have welcomed a surprise fourth baby \u2014 delivering an extraordinarily rare set of quadruplets that stunned even their doctors.<\/p>\n

Belinda Lotsu, 45, delivered one boy and three girls by caesarean section at Perth’s King Edward Memorial Hospital on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The babies, named Amy, Amana, Amber and Amon, are the fifteenth recorded set of quadruplets to have been born in WA and the first since 2020, according to the state’s health records.<\/p>\n

The father, Emmanuel Lotsu, said the pair were expecting triplets after undergoing IVF treatment.<\/p>\n

They found out about the fourth baby more than halfway through the pregnancy.<\/p>\n

“You could see the surprise on her face,” Mr Lotsu said recalling his wife’s reaction.<\/p>\n

“She was so surprised and stunned.”\"A<\/p>\n

The couple, along with their three-year-old son, have been living in the regional town of Kalgoorlie for two years, having migrated from Ghana.<\/p>\n

“We don’t have any family, like direct family in Kalgoorlie,” Ms Lotsu said.<\/p>\n

“But we belong to a church \u2026 and then there’s a Ghanaian community in Kalgoorlie. So they are the ones probably we call family over here.”<\/p>\n

All four babies are currently being cared for in specialist neonatal services.<\/p>\n

The couple said they should be able to take them home in a few weeks.<\/p>\n

The hospital’s nurse and midwifery coordinator Jourdin Ross said extensive preparation and contingency planning were critical for this birth.<\/p>\n

She said that included planning for emergency scenarios, neonatal care capacity and mother and baby safety at every step of the journey.<\/p>\n

“Beyond clinical care, the hospital wrapped comprehensive support around the family,” she said.<\/p>\n

“Ensuring compassion, dignity and continuity of care during an extraordinary and stressful experience.”<\/p>\n
