{"id":30989,"date":"2026-06-14T08:57:10","date_gmt":"2026-06-14T08:57:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/30989\/"},"modified":"2026-06-14T08:57:10","modified_gmt":"2026-06-14T08:57:10","slug":"drones-patrol-coogee-beach-after-ban-lifted-as-nsw-government-wont-rule-out-shark-culls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/30989\/","title":{"rendered":"Drones patrol Coogee Beach after ban lifted as NSW government won&#8217;t rule out shark culls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Drones are flying over Coogee Beach this Sunday to help with shark sightings after a ban that prevented their use due to the proximity to Sydney Airport was temporarily lifted by the regulator.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The renewed focus on the state&#8217;s shark program comes a day after a <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-13\/woman-injured-after-shark-attack-sydney-coogee-beach\/106794390\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106794390\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">35-year-old woman<\/a> swimming between the flags, close to shore, was bitten on her leg and arms at the beach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She remains in a stable but critical condition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Overhead vision suggests a white shark, 3 to 4 metres in length was present in the area at the time. So far this year about 170 of the species have been detected and 60 have been tagged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">However, none of the listening stations detected any sharks yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In the past nine months, according to Surf Life Saving NSW (SLSNSW), more than 70,000 surveillance flights have been carried out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The NSW government has also not ruled out shark culls in response to the latest incident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Overnight, SLSNSW secured an urgent exemption from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) allowing for surveillance over Coogee Beach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">CASA rules prevent the devices being used near &#8220;airports with control towers&#8221; including &#8220;runway approach and departure paths&#8221;. It was crystal clear.
