Nothing is off the table in terms of tackling sharks on NSW beaches the state\u2019s Minister for Agriculture Tara Moriarty said, as a woman remains in a critical condition following a shark attack in broad daylight at Coogee beach.<\/p>\n

An exemption to a ban on drone flight has been granted by authorities in the wake of the attack, with hopes it could be made permanent.<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing is off the table in terms of how we keep the community safe,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut we swim in the ocean, with living, breathing animals, and we have to share the ocean every day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ms Moriarty said they would be prioritising technology, such as the drones the NSW government has invested in for all beaches across the state, however they were not deployed at Coogee because of the proximity to the airport.<\/p>\n

\u201cSurf Life Saving New South Wales have applied to CASA for an urgent \u2026 exemption to be able to fly drones over Coogee Beach, that has been granted, and we, as a New South Wales government, will work with Surf Life Saving New South Wales to work with CASA to make sure that that becomes permanent,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Ms Moriarty said it was a \u201cvery devastating day\u201d at Coogee beach and thanked everyone who was there to help the woman.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve seen too many of them over the course of this summer, and my heart goes out to the young woman who is still in hospital and to her family,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wish her a speedy, full recovery.<\/p>\n

\u201cI also want to thank everybody who was here yesterday \u2026 It\u2019s a very traumatic experience for the people who were involved in that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s so wrong that we don\u2019t cull sharks after attacks, it\u2019s so wrong that we don\u2019t have a commercial shark fishery given the explosion in shark numbers and it\u2019s so wrong that we don\u2019t put people before sharks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Off-duty lifeguard Charlie Verco was in the water when the woman was attacked and dragged her to shore on his board.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was paddling through Coogee and just about 100m ahead of me, a group of swimmers started shouting shark,\u201d he told ABC Weekend Breakfast.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost of the time it\u2019s usually not a shark.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut as I started paddling over close towards them, I could see this thing underwater moving quite slowly and I almost thought it was moving inquisitively and I thought it would just have a look at them, realise they weren\u2019t food and leave them alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Verco is in the water most days and said he has seen an increase in sharks over the last few years.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d say there\u2019d be more in the last year than I\u2019ve heard or seen in my entire life before that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI personally don\u2019t feel as safe going to the water now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt just shows that you can be vulnerable at any point now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Coogee MP Marjorie O\u2019Neill said a community event will be held at the Coogee Surf Club on Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor those in our community who would like some advice, they don\u2019t know how to talk to their kids about getting back into the water,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
