(Supplied: AHT\/Al Fastier)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But at last month&#8217;s annual meeting of Antarctic Treaty nations, New Zealand tabled a report to remind parties about safety risks first raised at last year&#8217;s meeting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;In 2025, New Zealand reported that chemicals inside Scott&#8217;s hut, Cape Evans and Shackleton&#8217;s hut, Cape Royds, were assessed to be potential explosive hazards due to the possible presence of picric acid crystals, picric acid solution and peroxide crystals,&#8221; the report states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The report does not detail the amount of chemicals in the huts, nor the types of containers they are in.<\/p>\n<p>Chemicals only detonate under certain conditions<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Nathan Kilah, an associate professor in chemistry at the University of Tasmania, was not involved in the assessment of the chemicals in the huts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But Dr Kilah told the ABC that when those types of chemicals were found in laboratories in Australia, &#8220;often the bomb squad would be called out&#8221; to ensure their safe disposal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">As an example of the risk, he said picric acid had a &#8220;higher relative effectiveness factor as an explosive than TNT&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">If it were to detonate near a person, he said, it could cause significant injuries in the same way as other explosives could.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Bottles, notepads, equipment and other artefacts on a bench inside Scott's Terra Nova Hut.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/a92079e4ec2ef4166fc6d54a2dc4a512.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Biology equipment and other artefacts at Captain Robert Falcon Scott&#8217;s\u00a0Terra Nova\u00a0Hut. (Supplied: AHT\/Stefanie White)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Kilah said if the substances in the huts were proven to be picric acid crystals, picric acid solution and peroxide crystals, they would only detonate under certain conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">These included being exposed to fire, heat, friction or shock, such as being dropped or knocked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;So, there is [an] explosion risk for all of these substances,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-12\/wilkes-station-in-antarctica-a-toxic-legacy\/106281888\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australia&#8217;s toxic legacy in Antarctica<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The ABC has been given rare access to an abandoned Australian base in Antarctica that continues to pose a threat to the environment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;But with the fact that they&#8217;ve been there for so long, it really highlights that [an explosion is] not necessarily inherent to it just sitting on the shelf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Something needs to happen to it, and that would then be the trigger typically for those things to explode.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Risk mitigation measures in place<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The huts and their surrounds are designated as Antarctic Specially Protected Areas (ASPA), meaning a permit is required to visit them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Under Antarctic Treaty rules, up to 2,000 people are allowed at the sites each year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But only 40 people can be in the area, and only eight inside the huts, at any one time, and they must be with a trained guide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Antarctica New Zealand&#8217;s general manager of policy and environment, Ceisha Poirot, said mitigation measures had been put in place to reduce any risks to visitors.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Inside Scotts hut a rope between two wooden tables blocks access to chemicals.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/168bd7003692b7ba61b8208b7e1dd1ce.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A rope barrier installed in Captain Robert Falcon Scott&#8217;s hut is designed to prevent any interference with chemicals.\u00a0 (Supplied: ATCM)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">These include warning signs and temporary barriers, such as furniture and ropes, to keep visitors away from the chemicals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Poirot said officials from New Zealand had hoped to assess and potentially remove the chemicals last summer, but sea ice conditions prevented vehicular access to the two sites.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She said another attempt would be made next summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;re all working hard to remedy any potential risk and deal with it and make sure that we communicate with everybody,&#8221;
