They haven&#8217;t fixed the laws &#8230; we&#8217;re still losing lots of trees,&#8221; Redlands resident Una Sandeman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Sandeman is among a collective of residents in the region, east of Brisbane, who continue to protest the clearing of roughly 600 trees at Ormiston College \u2014 a private school and early learning centre which is adding new sporting ovals to its campus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It was approved by the state government in May and clearing has now begun.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A tan-skinned woman in a wide-brimmed hat poses for camera. (ABC News: Edward Gill)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The school plans to offset almost the entire loss by replanting more than 500 &#8220;preferred koala habitat trees&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But despite impacting a site mapped as &#8220;core koala habitat&#8221; in Queensland, the project was not assessed by the federal environment department.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We are concerned that this is going to be setting a dangerous precedent for koalas in the future,&#8221; Ms Sandeman said.<\/p>\n<p>Self-assessment system criticised<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Before last year, Australia&#8217;s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act had not been changed in 25 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Everyone agrees that the laws as they stand are broken and need to be reformed,&#8221; Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But one element that was not tweaked was how projects are referred to the federal government.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Anthony Albanese\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/caf2056d127204d87775f1daac344e17.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Reforming Australia&#8217;s environment laws was a centrepiece of the Albanese government&#8217;s second-term agenda.
