{"id":3209,"date":"2026-05-02T04:45:07","date_gmt":"2026-05-02T04:45:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/3209\/"},"modified":"2026-05-02T04:45:07","modified_gmt":"2026-05-02T04:45:07","slug":"mornington-peninsula-voters-head-to-polls-for-nepean-by-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/3209\/","title":{"rendered":"Mornington Peninsula voters head to polls for Nepean by-election"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Victorians on the western tip of the Mornington Peninsula will head to the polls today to elect a new Member of Parliament in the Nepean by-election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The by-election was triggered by the resignation of former tennis star Sam Groth, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-04\/sam-groth-quits-victorian-parliament-nepean-by-election\/106304976\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106304976\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">who quit parliament in February<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Liberal party will look to retain the seat this weekend, which it has held for all but one term in the past 40 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Labor is choosing to not contest the by-election, but the Liberals face a challenge from the Greens, One Nation and five independent candidates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Groth won the seat back from Labor in the 2022 state election by a margin of 6.4 per cent.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A black and white map of the Nepean district.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/19c7054e81eec6810e107ce9eea67cfc.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">There are 13 voting centres set up across the Nepean electorate for today&#8217;s by-election.
