Victorians on the western tip of the Mornington Peninsula will head to the polls today to elect a new Member of Parliament in the Nepean by-election.<\/p>\n

The by-election was triggered by the resignation of former tennis star Sam Groth, who quit parliament in February<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Liberal party will look to retain the seat this weekend, which it has held for all but one term in the past 40 years.<\/p>\n

Labor is choosing to not contest the by-election, but the Liberals face a challenge from the Greens, One Nation and five independent candidates.<\/p>\n

Mr Groth won the seat back from Labor in the 2022 state election by a margin of 6.4 per cent.<\/p>\n

Figures from the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) show a strong turnout for early voting in the by-election.<\/p>\n

VEC commissioner Sven Bluemmel said that as of Friday afternoon, more than half of the 50,000 residents in the electorate had already voted.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“We’ve seen the trend continue, that people seem to like early voting, and we of course provide every opportunity for people to do that,” he said.<\/p>\n

2026 Nepean by-election<\/a><\/p>\n

Voters will choose who replaces former professional tennis player and deputy Liberal leader Sam Groth at the Nepean by-election ahead of the Victorian state election in November.<\/p>\n

“But this looks like it will be one of the highest early turnouts that we’ve seen.”<\/p>\n

There are 13 voting centres around the electorate operating from 8am to 6pm, with each listed on the VEC website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Residents over the age of 18 living in Nepean who have not enrolled are also informed they may enrol and vote on the spot at any voting centre.<\/p>\n

Nepean residents can enrol with one of the following documents:<\/p>\n

an Australian passport, drivers licence or learner permit, ora council rates notice in their name, oran electricity bill in your name for their current home address.<\/p>\n

Polling places are still open until 6pm across the electorate for those who have not yet voted.\u00a0<\/p>\n
