{"id":3340,"date":"2026-05-02T08:58:19","date_gmt":"2026-05-02T08:58:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/3340\/"},"modified":"2026-05-02T08:58:19","modified_gmt":"2026-05-02T08:58:19","slug":"what-we-know-about-the-isis-linked-australian-families-in-syria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/3340\/","title":{"rendered":"What we know about the ISIS-linked Australian families in Syria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Four Australian women, their children and grandchildren are stuck in limbo in Syria after leaving a refugee camp housing family members of suspected Islamic State fighters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Last week the group <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-04-24\/australian-isis-brides-syria-refugee-camp-attempt-to-leave-again\/106604896\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106604896\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">left the Al Roj camp in north-east Syria with the goal of heading to the capital, Damascus, and flying home to Australia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But after <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-01\/australia-has-no-legal-way-to-block-isis-brides-law-expert-says\/106629468\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106629468\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Syrian authorities said they prevented the group from reaching the airport because of strong rhetoric from the Australian government<\/a>, it is unclear what their next moves will be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The ABC can reveal the group includes three generations of the same family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Here is what we know about them.<\/p>\n<p>Kawsar Abbas<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Kawsar Abbas, 54, is from Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She is the wife of Mohammed Ahmad, who ran a charity to support the people of Syria.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Older man with grey and black beard sits wearing orange prison uniform in front of dull cream wall.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/f447fe38ef3748540ccc8accacd369c2.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Mohammed Ahmad spoke to the ABC from detention in Syria in 2019. (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Australian Federal Police suspected the charity of funnelling cash to Islamic State.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In 2019, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-10-20\/family-detained-in-syria-facing-grim-prospect-australian-return\/11606660\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/11606660\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mohammed Ahmad told the ABC that he and his family got trapped in Syria<\/a> after travelling from the charity&#8217;s headquarters in Turkey to attend the wedding of his son, Omar, in 2014.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mohammed said soon after arriving in Syria, he realised Omar had sworn allegiance to Islamic State. I&#8217;ve been living there since I was a little kid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I would rather be judged in Australia than here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In 2019, ahead of the Syrian winter, <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/world\/middle-east\/life-on-australia-street-syria-where-even-our-government-fears-to-tread-20191022-p5333x.html\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kawsar Abbas told the Sydney Morning Herald<\/a> she was worried about the health of the children in the camp.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;One of our tents flooded and then it dried up \u2026 but winter is not going to be like that. (ABC News: Haybar Othman)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Zeinab, 31, is the second-eldest daughter of Mohammed and Kawsar Abbas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-02-20\/australian-women-who-lived-under-islamic-state-come-home-syria\/104953800\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/104953800\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">last spoke to the ABC from the Al Roj camp in 2025<\/a> and made an impassioned plea to the Australian government to help get the group home, saying she feared for her safety and the lives of her children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s not a place for a child to be, and every day, especially for the past two months \u2026 it&#8217;s just getting harder,&#8221; Zeinab told the ABC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There&#8217;s a street [in the camp] \u2014 it&#8217;s called Australia Street. We live closely, we have a strong connection because we all have the same motive. We all want to get home.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-02-20\/australian-women-who-lived-under-islamic-state-come-home-syria\/104953800\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">From 2025: Australian women who lived under ISIS want to come home<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Australian women who lived in the terror group&#8217;s so-called caliphate speak from detention camps in Syria, begging the federal government to bring them home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">At the time she revealed that Australian officials had travelled to the camp to meet with the women and children in 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The officials interviewed families and carried out identity checks and DNA tests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">One of the architects of the operation to get the families out of Al Roj, Sydney GP Jamal Rifi, had paid for the passports and carried them to Syria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Months later four families were repatriated to Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They took the first group and we were so happy that some of us were getting out, some of our kids will be saved,&#8221; Zeinab said at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Janai Safar<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Janai was studying health science in Australia before she left in 2015 to travel to Islamic State-occupied Syria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The 32-year-old had a child in Syria in 2016.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She was married to an Islamic State fighter who died in 2017, the ABC has been told.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Janai was among the women whom Four Corners met in the Al-Hol camp in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Back in 2019, <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theaustralian.com.au\/nation\/aussie-isis-bride-why-i-wont-let-my-son-return-home\/news-story\/4352aefd4b832fce81a49222f7161918\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Janai told the Australian newspaper<\/a> that she got married after arriving in Syria, then stayed at home and looked after her child.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She said while she did not regret travelling to Syria, she feared being treated like a criminal if she ever returned to Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I didn&#8217;t train or kill anyone,&#8221; the masthead quoted her as saying.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I just sat at home, and they will put me in jail, they will take my child off me. Why? I&#8217;m a Muslim.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Her father told the newspaper she was a &#8220;stubborn but kind-hearted&#8221; woman who posed no threat to Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Her grandfather <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-10-01\/kurds-plead-with-australia-to-take-back-islamic-state-families\/11560338\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/11560338\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">John Crockett told the ABC in 2019 it would be better for the families to return to Australia<\/a> than to languish in camps in Syria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;If some of them are going to go to jail when they come home it&#8217;s far better for them to be in prison back here and do a term of whatever they&#8217;ve been convicted of,&#8221;
