{"id":33549,"date":"2026-06-18T04:01:08","date_gmt":"2026-06-18T04:01:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/33549\/"},"modified":"2026-06-18T04:01:08","modified_gmt":"2026-06-18T04:01:08","slug":"city-of-joondalup-scraps-planned-cuts-to-library-opening-hours-after-public-backlash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/33549\/","title":{"rendered":"City of Joondalup scraps planned cuts to library opening hours after public backlash"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">City of Joondalup ratepayers have thrown the book at their local government over a proposal to cut library hours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">In an effort to deliver budget savings, the city had intended to reduce opening hours by one hour, from 7pm to 6pm, on two nights a week at the Duncraig, Whitford and Woodvale public libraries from July 6.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The move would have cut staff costs by about $47,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">However, the city has abandoned the proposal after a petition calling for the plans to be scrapped was launched and signed by more than 600 residents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Joondalup\u2019s new chief executive officer, Craig Lloyd, who stepped into the top job only last month, confirmed the city will not proceed with the changes and said community input played a key role in the decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cThe community has been clear about how important our libraries are, and we\u2019ve listened,\u201d Mr Lloyd said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cOn Monday, I visited our libraries and spoke with staff and visitors to better understand how they operate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cIt was clear our libraries provide an exemplary service and are deeply valued by the community \u2014 we should be proud of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">At the city\u2019s previous council meeting, where members of the community spoke against the changes, city directors said the reductions were being made in line with budget parameters aimed at reducing the city\u2019s operational budget shortfall.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/806ba9bbad794ef846df13f2636263aa30891bfc.jpg\" alt=\"Opening hours at the Woodvale, Whitford and Duncraig libraries would have been reduced by one hour, two days a week under a now-abandoned cost-saving plan.\" class=\"css-16r7l45-StyledImage en5ut4d0\"\/>Camera IconOpening hours at the Woodvale, Whitford and Duncraig libraries would have been reduced by one hour, two days a week under a now-abandoned cost-saving plan.
