{"id":34257,"date":"2026-06-19T03:24:12","date_gmt":"2026-06-19T03:24:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/34257\/"},"modified":"2026-06-19T03:24:12","modified_gmt":"2026-06-19T03:24:12","slug":"one-nations-barnaby-joyce-ridicules-treasurer-after-cgt-backdown-says-budget-in-disaster-territory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/34257\/","title":{"rendered":"One Nation&#8217;s Barnaby Joyce ridicules Treasurer after CGT backdown, says budget in \u2018disaster\u2019 territory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One Nation MP Barnaby Joyce has panned Treasurer Jim Chalmers\u2019 denial that he backtracked on his budget, after Labor unveiled its capital gains tax carve-outs for businesses.<\/p>\n<p>The government on Thursday lifted the \u201csmall business\u201d threshold from those with turnover of $2 million to turnover of $10 million, flagged a start-up concession and exempted testamentary trusts from planned CGT changes.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Chalmers told Sky News Australia the changes did not constitute a \u201cbackflip\u201d, instead labelling them the outcome of consultation announced at the budget.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Joyce asked if the carve-outs were not a \u201cbig enough back down\u201d for anybody else.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJim, what does a bus look like when you\u2019re underneath it and it&#8217;s driving over you,\u201d he told the Bolt Report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTalk about the Prime Minister throwing his Treasurer under a bus, which he had to do because you should have seen the budget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One Nation&#8217;s freshly-promoted treasury spokesman said he could see Labor preparing to \u201cback down\u201d since the budget was unveiled at the beginning of May.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a disaster, I mean, we can see this coming a mile away&#8230; you can hear the churning of this bus warming up in the back room,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIts driver is the Member for Grayndler (Prime Minister Anthony Albanese) and Jim is called, I don\u2019t know, tarmac, because he\u2019s just gone straight over the top. It was a disaster.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was the most panned budget in my time in politics, a complete train wreck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Chalmers and Mr Albanese softened the impact of their capital gains tax overhaul for businesses following significant outcry over the budget plans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will increase the new threshold by five times, bringing it into line with the threshold for small businesses in a number of other features of the system,\u201d Mr Albanese said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re also proposing to introduce a new innovative business tax concession for start-ups and will release the consultation paper on the start-up sector.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The turnover threshold for small businesses to access the 50 per cent capital gains tax discount was lifted from $2 million to $10 million.<\/p>\n<p>The carve-outs will also provide a 50 per cent capital gains discount to early stage investors and founders, as well as employee share scheme participants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will put out a fair bit of detail on our position and we will be seeking feedback on that in the coming weeks,\u201d Mr Chalmers said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Albanese also revealed discretionary trusts would be exempt from the minimum 30 per cent tax where they were used for \u201cgenuine testamentary purposes\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Chalmers confirmed the legislation, currently in the Upper House, would be updated to include these changes.<\/p>\n<p>It comes after the Albanese government clashed with the start-up sector, which warned the previously announced reforms would damage innovation.<\/p>\n<p>Labor&#8217;s original plan scrapped the 50 per cent CGT discount and replaced it with inflation-adjusted cost base indexation combined with a 30 per cent minimum tax rate on capital gains.<\/p>\n<p>In his budget speech, Mr Chalmers said the measures were intended to \u201clevel the playing field for workers and first home buyers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>However, while the reforms were framed around housing affordability and intergenerational equity, the impact on the start-up sector quickly emerged as a major concern and eventually forced the government to change course.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"One Nation MP Barnaby Joyce has panned Treasurer Jim Chalmers\u2019 denial that he backtracked on his budget, after&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":34258,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[22,21,30069,30068,3220,2742,4957,30067,1955],"class_list":["post-34257","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-australia","tag-au","tag-austrlia","tag-backdown","tag-barnaby","tag-budget","tag-bus","tag-cgt","tag-joyce","tag-one-nation"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/34257","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=34257"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/34257\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/34258"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=34257"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=34257"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=34257"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
