Let&#8217;s have that conversation first before we decide to go any further.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Private cameras in use<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Commissioner Blanch said private companies were already using live facial recognition.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Elsewhere in Australia, the national privacy commissioner found <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-11-19\/oaic-investigation-into-bunnings-facial-recognition\/104613700\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/104613700\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bunnings had in 2024 breached the privacy<\/a> of potentially hundreds of thousands of Australians through the use of facial recognition cameras to scan every customer on entry in an effort to reduce theft.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">However, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-05\/bunnings-wins-ai-facial-recognition-tech-fight\/106309308\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106309308\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the ruling was later overturned,<\/a> potentially paving the way for other major retailers to embrace the technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The privacy commissioner also <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-18\/kmart-facial-recognition-technology-privacy-commissioner\/105785802\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105785802\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">found Kmart had breached Australians\u2019 privacy<\/a> by collecting their personal and sensitive information through a facial recognition technology system designed to tackle refund fraud.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Kmart was found not to have notified shoppers or sought their consent to use the technology to collect their biometric information.<\/p>\n<p>Questions over protests<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Commission Blanch said it was not his &#8220;intent&#8221; for the technology to be used at protests &#8220;except if we have intelligence that there is a significant risk of someone seeking to do harm&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But he said that could be the case at the upcoming Land Forces defence expo, which Perth will host in October, if police had intelligence of a threat to that event.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Police are monitoring through screens. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/db79713e8825f92a02282f470d149dbb.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">If the technology detects a match, an alert will sent to nearby police officers to confirm the person&#8217;s identity.
