{"id":35379,"date":"2026-06-21T04:40:10","date_gmt":"2026-06-21T04:40:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/35379\/"},"modified":"2026-06-21T04:40:10","modified_gmt":"2026-06-21T04:40:10","slug":"south-fremantle-defender-ethan-hughes-says-bulldogs-learnt-important-lessons-in-three-game-losing-streak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/35379\/","title":{"rendered":"South Fremantle defender Ethan Hughes says Bulldogs learnt important lessons in three-game losing streak"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">South Fremantle veteran Ethan Hughes says the lessons his side learnt throughout a recent run of losses will hold them in good stead as they gear up for another attack on the premiership flag.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The reigning premiers opened their 2026 campaign by winning five of their first six games but then endured three consecutive defeats, including to cross-town rivals East Fremantle in the marquee WA Day Derby and East Perth in their first official meeting since last year\u2019s grand final.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">After regrouping over a bye last weekend, they returned to the winners list on Saturday, comfortably accounting for last-placed West Perth by 39 points at Fremantle Community Bank Oval<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Hughes said his side\u2019s reaction to their mid-season slump \u201cwasn\u2019t over the top\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cClearly, it\u2019s not good losing games, but we took a lot of learnings out of it,\u201d Hughes said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cThe past couple of weeks, we\u2019ve really focused on our team defence across the whole ground. We really brought that into this week\u2019s game and showed we are able to defend the whole ground well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cWe got back to our contest game, got some ball movement going, and we were able to put a score on the board, which certainly helped us (on Saturday).<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cOver the last couple of weeks, we felt like the ball was just flying out the front of stoppages a little bit, so it was nice we were able to fix that up and have our guys working together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cWe had some great work from our younger guys coming up into the side today \u2014 Sam Otto, Riley Colborne, they really stood up and won their one-on-one battles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The Bulldogs have moved into third on the ladder on the back of their first win since round six, figuring ahead of Perth on percentage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">They sit one win adrift of pacesetters Peel Thunder and Claremont and four premiership points ahead of the four sides with 5-5 win-loss records in what is shaping as an intriguing race for places in the finals.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/8ea86dde40b856da75f3128643e77369fb9ef73e.jpg\" alt=\"Ethan Hughes says South Fremantle did not panic in their recent run of losses.\" class=\"css-16r7l45-StyledImage en5ut4d0\"\/>Camera IconEthan Hughes says South Fremantle did not panic in their recent run of losses. Credit: Carwyn Monck\/The West Australian<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Hughes said his side\u2019s focus would remain firmly on themselves in the second half of the season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cIt\u2019s really tight, the top five of the ladder now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cWe\u2019ve put ourselves in a good spot.
