{"id":38307,"date":"2026-06-25T08:28:11","date_gmt":"2026-06-25T08:28:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/38307\/"},"modified":"2026-06-25T08:28:11","modified_gmt":"2026-06-25T08:28:11","slug":"one-nation-leader-pauline-hanson-clashes-with-abc-journalism-over-meaning-of-monoculture-versus-multiculturalism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/38307\/","title":{"rendered":"One Nation leader Pauline Hanson clashes with ABC journalism over meaning of &#8216;monoculture&#8217; versus &#8216;multiculturalism&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has been embroiled in a heated exchange with an ABC journalist over what it means to be multicultural.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Hanson has sparked intense debate over her use of the term \u201cmonoculture\u201d after she rejected multiculturalism in her <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.skynews.com.au\/australia-news\/politics\/one-nation-leader-pauline-hanson-faces-journalists-in-first-ever-appearance-at-national-press-club\/news-story\/8552a29bf7687dbb802532e1dc1e4291\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"8552a29bf7687dbb802532e1dc1e4291\" data-tgev-label=\"australia-news\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\">recent National Press Club address<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The One Nation leader has clarified that she supports freedom of religion and does not oppose immigrants from other countries if they subscribed to Australian values.<\/p>\n<p>An ABC reporter asked Ms Hanson on Thursday if she needed to define what \u201cmonoculture\u201d she wanted for the nation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you need to define what the monoculture is that you want for Australia? People are wondering exactly what that means. Can you describe it for us?\u201d Ms Hanson was asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;ve always had multiculturalism rammed down us right from back in 1996 when I opposed it then,\u201d Ms Hanson told reporters at the press conference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince then we&#8217;ve had other countries around the world (which) said it hasn&#8217;t worked. We should be proud of our national identity, who we are.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we go into the Olympics or the Commonwealth Games we fly the Australian flag because we&#8217;re all Australians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ABC journalist responded: \u201cThat\u2019s what multiculturalism is\u2026 like in your monoculture can people speak a different language at home?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan they practice a different religion? Can they eat different foods? That is multiculturalism isn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before Ms Hanson had a chance to answer, a One Nation representative asked if the journalist worked for the SBS.<\/p>\n<p>The ABC reporter said they worked for the public broadcaster and wanted to understand Ms Hanson\u2019s vision for the country.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"poster-img\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/6d5f376daa9fa2d5bfc07dfa70dec7ab.jpeg\" data-sctrack=\"op-poster-img\" alt=\"\u2018It should be one language\u2019: Pauline Hanson calls for a \u2018monocultural\u2019 Australia\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201c(Former prime ministers) John Howard and Tony Abbott and other leaders around the world have said multiculturalism doesn&#8217;t work,\u201d Ms Hanson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo and research that, understand what&#8217;s happening out there\u2026. We are one nation. We are one nation and (we) should (have) one language.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Hanson has <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.skynews.com.au\/australia-news\/politics\/one-nation-leader-pauline-hanson-faces-journalists-in-first-ever-appearance-at-national-press-club\/news-story\/8552a29bf7687dbb802532e1dc1e4291\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"8552a29bf7687dbb802532e1dc1e4291\" data-tgev-label=\"australia-news\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">long had a combative relationship with sections of the media<\/a>, particularly the taxpayer-funded ABC.<\/p>\n<p>One Nation has blocked ABC journalists from attending some press events following disputes over the broadcaster\u2019s coverage of One Nation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey&#8217;ve been very biased towards me for many years, even back in 1996 when I was first elected,\u201d Ms\u00a0<a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.skynews.com.au\/business\/media\/taxpayerfunded-abc-chair-kim-williams-takes-aim-at-one-nation-while-claiming-editorial-neutrality\/news-story\/a144621a02473606600c58197b33f9e0\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"a144621a02473606600c58197b33f9e0\" data-tgev-label=\"business\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\" data-nca-capi-id=\"a144621a02473606600c58197b33f9e0\" data-nca-asset-type=\"story\">Hanson recently told Sky News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The exchange comes after Ms Hanson doubled down on her calls for monoculture, saying critics were deliberately misinterpreting her comments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the past week, the far-left have naturally taken my comments into the realm of utter fantasy,\u201d she told the upper house on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was going to ban foreign food, and the Socceroos wouldn&#8217;t have beaten Turkey under my policy. What rubbish\u2014predictable and pathetic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Socceroos, in fact, represent my vision of a monocultural Australia\u2014people from different backgrounds and cultures and nations all wearing green and gold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"poster-img\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1782376091_467_e22ec8c9465860fa9f1d7d3e36732fb9.jpeg\" data-sctrack=\"op-poster-img\" alt=\"Hanson refuses to back down as Albanese slammed over multiculturalism attack\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Asked about Ms Hanson\u2019s remarks at a press conference on Tuesday, Mr Albanese dismissed the idea as inconsistent with modern Australia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cModern Australia is not a monoculture and it never has been,\u201d Mr Albanese told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndeed, under pre-1770 and then 1788, there were many First Nations in this country.
