{"id":39001,"date":"2026-06-26T06:47:12","date_gmt":"2026-06-26T06:47:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/39001\/"},"modified":"2026-06-26T06:47:12","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T06:47:12","slug":"isis-bride-accused-of-crimes-against-humanity-and-slavery-offences-granted-bail-in-melbourne","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/39001\/","title":{"rendered":"ISIS bride accused of crimes against humanity and slavery offences granted bail in Melbourne"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An ISIS bride accused of committing slavery offences has been granted bail by a Melbourne magistrate.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Melbourne grandmother Kawsar Ahmad (also known as Abbas), 54, and her daughter Zeinab Ahmad, 31, were arrested at Melbourne Airport by a joint counter-terrorism team upon their return to Australia from Syria in May this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ms Ahmad faces four charges over allegations she participated in the enslavement of a teenaged Yazidi woman in Syria.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Chief Magistrate Lisa Hannan on Friday ordered Ms Ahmad\u2019s release from custody, suggesting strict bail conditions were sufficient to mitigate the risk she posed.<\/p>\n<p>Her brother will guarantee a $75,000 surety, and Ms Ahmad is required to comply with nightly curfews, report to police thrice weekly, and surrender any travel documents.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She must also provide the Australian Federal Police with a mobile number and PIN. She may only own a single phone and may not conduct calls with anyone outside Australia.<\/p>\n<p>It is alleged\u00a0Ms\u00a0Ahmad\u00a0and her husband\u00a0Mohammad,\u00a0an IS militant,\u00a0moved to Syria\u00a0a decade ago, where he\u00a0bought the alleged slave\u00a0for $10,000 in\u00a02017.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yazidis are an ethno-religious minority in Iraq, Syria, Turkey and Iran, who were widely massacred and trafficked during the 2010s during Islamic State\u2019s war in the region.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Federal police allege the girl was repeatedly raped and beaten by\u00a0Ms\u00a0Ahmad\u2019s partner.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ms\u00a0Ahmad and her daughter, Zeinab, were detained by Kurdish forces in March 2019 and held with other family members in the al-Roj displaced person\u2019s camp in northeastern Syria.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer acting for\u00a0Ms\u00a0Ahmad earlier this week told the court she would live a \u201csmall and local life\u201d if bailed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He said she would not proselytise nor engage with mosques if she were released, following concerns from police prosecutors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Police prosecutors\u00a0had\u00a0alleged\u00a0Ms\u00a0Ahmad had taught religious studies to the alleged slave who felt \u201cthreatened\u201d by her.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A forensic psychologist diagnosed Ms Ahmad with a string of interrelated anxiety and depression-related disorders, the court heard this week during the bail hearing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He told the court she was so focused on spending time with her relatives she was \u201cvery unlikely to want to leave the house much\u201d, according to the ABC.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It comes as Ms Ahmad\u2019s daughter, Zeinab, last week was ordered to remain behind bars as she was found to pose an unreasonable risk to the community.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is\u00a0alleged\u00a0Zeinab\u00a0prevented a Yazidi slave from leaving her home and ordered her to do chores around the house.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Federal Police (AFP) alleged Zeinab \u201cmistreated\u201d the girl, though it is not alleged she physically assaulted her.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Her two charges each carry a penalty of 25 years behind bars if she is found guilty.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Judge Hannan accepted Zeinab could face delays in her case and that the 31-year-old&#8217;s daughter was experiencing hardships.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She also found\u00a0Zeinab needed to prove \u201cexceptional circumstances\u201d for requiring bail, given her past support of Islamic State.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Federal police argued\u00a0Zeinab posed an unacceptable risk to the public and had not renounced her\u00a0previous\u00a0support for jihadists.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Judge Hannan agreed\u00a0there was a lack of compelling evidence regarding\u00a0Zeinab\u2019s current beliefs and found she posed a threat to the community.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"An ISIS bride accused of committing slavery offences has been granted bail by a Melbourne magistrate.\u00a0\u00a0 Melbourne grandmother&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":39002,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[31927,31926,31929,1113,6881,1109,4034,260,157,31928],"class_list":["post-39001","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-melbourne","tag-abba","tag-abbas","tag-ahmad","tag-bail","tag-bride","tag-court","tag-isis","tag-melbourne","tag-sky","tag-zeinab"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/39001","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=39001"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/39001\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/39002"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=39001"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=39001"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=39001"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
