(ABC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Those who did not serve overseas have had fewer entitlements until now, with the group, known as &#8220;Nashos&#8221; now coming under the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2004.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Those conscripted during that time are aged between 75 and 81 now.<\/p>\n<p>Claims denied in old age<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Many Nashos have had difficult proving injuries sustained during service <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-07-26\/whitlam-government-army-discharge-haunts-queenslander\/101128348\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/101128348\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">because of the poor records kept at the time<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Many say they also suffered even poorer treatment from the public and veterans&#8217; organisations <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2020-04-23\/vietnam-veterans-plea-for-military-medal-anzac-day-rvcm\/12176288\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/12176288\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">than other Vietnam War veterans after National Service was abolished by former prime minister Gough Whitlam<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">George Filipowicz&#8217;s birthday came up in 1970, while he was living in Adelaide with his parents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;When that happened, I was the third male member of the family to be conscripted,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man with a bald head wearing a checked shirt in front of a window\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/946884c48ee4390e80d429c1e24ee371.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">George Filipowicz is now 75 and helps other former National Servicemen. (ABC News: Ashlin Blieschke)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Filipowicz is now 75 and represents South Australia and the Northern Territory on the board of an organisation that advocates for National Servicemen called <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/listen\/programs\/nightlife\/nashos---the-men-australia-forgot\/103271206\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/audiosegment\/103271206\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nasho Fair Go<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He had dental work done by a trainee dentist when he was in training at the Puckapunyal army training facility in central Victoria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said this had led to ongoing pain and difficulty chewing that he only recently had fixed at a cost of $2,500.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The dentist was absolutely disgusted at the work because they hardly left any teeth there \u2014 it was all filling,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;So, that&#8217;s why my teeth just all cracked and crumbled away \u2014 because there wasn&#8217;t enough \u2014 so we lodged a claim and it was just flatly refused.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"War medals in cases on a table\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/450a551ab89a455648a6c6641df86dcb.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">National Servicemen received some belated recognition in 2001 with medals in their honour. (ABC News: Ashlin Blieschke)<\/p>\n<p>Less complexity in new system\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">From the start of July 1, all veterans will have equal rights to make compensation claims, consolidating three separate schemes, including the Vietnam-era National Servicemen and those from the <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-10-01\/national-servicemen-association-of-australia-to-close-its-doors\/101489350\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/101489350\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">earlier 1951\u201359 National Service Training Scheme<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The change was a <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-09-09\/veteran-suicide-royal-commission-hands-down-report\/104328978\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/104328978\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recommendation in the report from the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide<\/a> that was handed down in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Federal Veterans&#8217; Affairs Minister Matt Keogh said <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dva.gov.au\/about-us\/inquiries-and-reviews\/veterans-legislation-reform\/veterans-legislation-reform-resources\/national-servicemen\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">the new scheme<\/a> would be easier for people to understand, simpler to use and claims could be processed more quickly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Now that we&#8217;re moving to a single scheme going forward after July 1, it means that any veteran, including our Nashos, if they have a new claim to bring, it will be dealt with under that new scheme after July 1,&#8221; Mr Keogh said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Or if they have an existing condition that&#8217;s already covered by DVA but that has got materially worse, they can seek extra support by bringing a new claim after July 1.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man wearing a suit and tie looking at a document\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/423647102688ddcf535f781c9478a50b.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Veterans&#8217; Affairs Minister Matt Keogh says the new system should be easier to use and quicker. (Supplied: George Filipowicz)<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;No choice&#8217; in conscription<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Jan Squire was conscripted in 1967 and is now 79.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She has had two knee replacements, one covered by the Department of Veterans&#8217; Affairs, and one not.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I think there ought to be some compensation for the loss of two years of my life,&#8221; Ms Squire said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s difficult to know how to argue that. (ABC News: Ashlin Blieschke)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She said the low number of those still alive meant the compensation owed would be low.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The main issue to me is that I&#8217;ve given two years of life to serve the country and I&#8217;ve really had nothing in return for that,&#8221;  she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I had no choice.
