A father charged with murder and torture over the death of his baby in 2024 will remain in custody.<\/p>\n

Alexander James Young, 22, was arrested on Friday as part of ongoing police investigations into the baby’s death.<\/p>\n

He has been charged with domestic violence offences of murder and torture.<\/p>\n

On February 26, 2024, paramedics were called to an Electra Street home in Bundaberg West.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A four-month-old baby, Lucas Young, was taken by the paramedics to Bundaberg Hospital, then flown to the Queensland Children’s Hospital in Brisbane.<\/p>\n

The baby died a week later.<\/p>\n

Hospital staff flagged the baby’s injuries and reported the matter to police.<\/p>\n

Mr Young appeared via video link in the Bundaberg Magistrates Court today.<\/p>\n

Several supporters were in the courtroom. A woman cried during the proceedings.<\/p>\n

Magistrate John McInnes ordered a brief of evidence be prepared.<\/p>\n

Mr Young remains in custody and the matter will return to court on August 25.<\/p>\n

‘Difficult investigation’<\/p>\n

Speaking prior to the court hearing on Monday, Detective Inspector Wade Lee said the baby’s injuries were consistent with “what’s commonly known as a child-shaking injury”.<\/p>\n

“Police have subsequently conducted a meticulous and challenging investigation,” he said.<\/p>\n

“The investigation of a child death is a particularly difficult investigation.”<\/p>\n
