{"id":40721,"date":"2026-06-29T08:56:18","date_gmt":"2026-06-29T08:56:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/40721\/"},"modified":"2026-06-29T08:56:18","modified_gmt":"2026-06-29T08:56:18","slug":"lucas-herrington-transfer-news-colorado-socceroos-defender-linked-with-barcelona-brisbane-roal-sell-on-clause","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/40721\/","title":{"rendered":"Lucas Herrington transfer news: Colorado, Socceroos defender linked with Barcelona, Brisbane Roal sell-on clause"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OAKLAND, CA \u2014 Socceroos World Cup goal scorer Connor Metcalfe says Brisbane Roar will be \u201cprobably kicking themselves\u201d that they cashed in on Lucas Herrington\u2019s sell-on clause.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/sport\/soccer\/barcelona-lob-historic-bid-for-teenage-socceroo-on-world-cup-eve-20260613-p606h4.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Sydney Morning Herald reported recently <\/a>that the A-League club had accepted a proposal from Colorado Rapids for $530, 000 to sell their sell-on clause, which was reportedly 20 per cent of any future sale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since then, the 18-year-old has made his World Cup debut and been linked with a move to Barcelona.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When asked about that on Sunday in Oakland, Metcalfe looked surprised and added: \u201cyeah, they\u2019ll probably be kicking themselves!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not that the speculation has, or will, impact the unflappable defender.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s pretty wild, to be honest,\u201d Metcalfe said, speaking of his teammate. \u201cNothing really fazes him. He\u2019s calm on the ball. I think the boys he\u2019s playing next to really help him on the field and also help him develop his game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think he\u2019s dealing with all the hype and all the press really well. He\u2019s very level headed, He\u2019s a very nice guy and I think that will help him a lot in his next stage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Herrington really is taking everything in his stride.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve loved it so far,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cObviously the icing on the cake the other day with the debut.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat was the best moment of my life, so I thoroughly enjoyed that, loved every minute and, looking forward to what\u2019s next.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No matter which way he was asked about his composure, or coolness, or confidence, Herrington found a way to try and politely explain how he is handling the hype.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cObviously I knew how important that game was, not just for us but for the whole country,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo obviously I knew the pressure that was in that game and I knew there was pressure on all of us. So I was looking forward to it; obviously I\u2019d dreamed of that moment since I was a kid and I just really wanted to embrace it, enjoy it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/IMG_7224-1024x768.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-41045\"  \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know that it\u2019s not going to come around every day. So I really tried to stay in the moment and just stay calm and hopefully I did that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Does he EVER feel anxious or stressed?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI just love playing football, so to me it was just a game of football with a lot of meaning, a lot of passion and I just tried to show that and put my best foot forward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI love playing for the country and that was probably my favourite game I\u2019ve ever played, so I just really enjoyed it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is impossible to ignore the transfer talk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m at the World Cup, so I\u2019m just trying to stay present,\u201d Herrington answered when asked about the Barcelona links.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cReally enjoy this moment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s my first one, hopefully first of many; it doesn\u2019t come around very often, it comes around every four years. So I\u2019m really just trying to enjoy every moment here.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWork hard and we\u2019ll see what comes after it but I\u2019m just fully focused on the World Cup and the team at the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added: \u201cBoth me and my agent are fully focused on the World Cup and I\u2019m just here to do a job for the country and that\u2019s all I\u2019m focused on at the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since leaving the A-League, which he only played in for 12 months, Herrington has built quite the CV.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He\u2019s played against Lionel Messi, Thomas Muller, Son Heung-Min and before playing in front of capacity crowds at the World Cup had faced crowds of 76,000 and 80,000 for Colorado against Inter Miami as well as at the Rose Bowl against Mexico.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt has happened quick,\u201d he admitted. \u201cI definitely wasn\u2019t picturing this when I left Australia six months ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cObviously in every kid\u2019s mind you want it to happen this quickly and you want it to happen like this, but it is a hard thing to do and I\u2019m just grateful to be given the opportunity to be here and just represent the country that I\u2019ve loved living in, love being from and I\u2019ve been supporting the Socceroos at World Cups for the past couple World Cups, so it\u2019s really special to be here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On playing in the States, he explained: \u201cIt helps a lot. Just like anything if you practise something a lot, it\u2019s going to become more natural and you\u2019re going to be less nervous.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo I think playing in front of seventy five thousand back in Denver and playing at the Rose Bowl in front of eighty thousand helps a lot\u2026 I\u2019ve been there before so it\u2019s just just another game to work hard, do my thing, and just enjoy it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scale of Herrington\u2019s rise has been summed up by the pre-season A-League video of Ruben Zadkvovich hailing him as the best defender in the country before he\u2019d even kicked a ball.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ZADKOVICH: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/football360.com.au\/fifa-world-cup-socceroos-news-lucas-herrington-ruben-zadkovich\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Heralded by your coach at Brisbane Roar as the best defender in Australian football before he\u2019d kicked a ball.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt took me a bit by surprise, I was sort of just standing there listening,\u201d he quipped.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was really nice to hear as a young player, obviously before I made my debut, so that was just giving me the confidence just to keep working hard, waiting for my opportunity, and I\u2019ll always be grateful to Ruben \u2013 he gave me my first shot in the A-League at a young age, so to be fair to him, I probably wouldn\u2019t be here if he didn\u2019t believe me back then.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe\u2019s always going to be the coach that handed me my professional debut and I\u2019ll always be grateful for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In that time, Herrington says he has come a long way in that short time, trusted by his coaches to grow while being unleashed on the park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt comes with age; probably my first ten or so games at the Roar when I was seventeen I was still making heaps of mistakes, still getting my positioning right and just obviously lacking that experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The World Cup has turbocharged that development, especially \u201cmentally\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Life has moved quickly for Herrington.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This video on Football360\u2019s socials unsurprisingly was a hit, with vision of a 14-year-old Herrington enjoying the scenes from Qatar at a live site in Brisbane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYeah, it\u2019s a really cool moment obviously,\u201d he said smiling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve been supporting the Socceroos at World Cups for as long as I can remember. So to be here is special.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy mates back home are all so supportive. They\u2019ve all loved watching me and watching the team do well in the World Cup. Just like another one of those moments that I pinch myself and just try and make everyone from where I\u2019m back from just proud and give them someone to look at that they can do it as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI just want see more and more players have those type of stories where they\u2019re supporting the World Cup and then they\u2019re there the next one. It\u2019s just so special. That\u2019s what the World Cup\u2019s about. So, you know, it\u2019s really special and I\u2019ve loved it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After listening to the youngster speak with the composure that he plays with, there\u2019s one answer that explains why and how he\u2019s handling himself so immaculately with the watching world\u2019s eyes on him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When complimented for his demeanour, he replied, simply: \u201cThank you. My mum will be happy to hear that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey\u2019re massive, they\u2019ve shaped and grown me and raised me into the person they want me to be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo they\u2019ve been massive. My parents have always taught me to be humble, respectful, and just give back when I can.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI love seeing the fans showing up at the trainings, games and I try to take my time with them when I can. So it\u2019s so special to me as a fan as well, the team to be in this position in this position.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI try and give back and just give back when I can but I really enjoy those moments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added: \u201cIt\u2019s important to give back.
