(Supplied: Presbyterian Ladies&#8217; College, Armidale)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a non-formal education program for young people that focuses on physical recreation, skills, voluntary service and adventurous journey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We had practised this exact scenario a couple of years ago with this group of students when they were doing their bronze Duke of Edinburgh hike,&#8221; Ms Burney said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;When I called out to the girls and asked them to wait and told them our plan was to help this gentleman, they were so excited, there were lots of comments like &#8216;wow, we&#8217;ve trained for this&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s all fun and exciting the first 10 minutes, but once you&#8217;re doing that for an hour and a half, you&#8217;ve really got to lock in.&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man wearing a grey shirt and cap smiles into camera as he stands on top of a mountain after a hike.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/0713041f9f25c0e7d1cbf1657b2bd7b7.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Thomas Wendland says he&#8217;s grateful to the students and their teachers and has bought himself some hiking boots for his next adventures.\u00a0 (Supplied: Thomas Wendland)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dubbo resident Thomas Wendland said he knew instantly that he had seriously injured himself after slipping on the track.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I heard it snap, I knew something wasn&#8217;t right,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We kept pushing on, and we ran into a couple of nurses along the way who helped by putting a compression bandage on it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Then I fell on it again a little bit later, that&#8217;s when the pain started a lot.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Wendland said the students and their teachers were amazing, getting right to work to find a solution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I felt quite useless while they all got it set up,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I was a little bit worried there for a while, my friend did everything that she could do, and I&#8217;m also very grateful for her help, but we didn&#8217;t know what to do and what the next steps would be if we didn&#8217;t come across the girls.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It absolutely means the world that they were able to offer the assistance they did.
