{"id":41929,"date":"2026-07-01T03:20:09","date_gmt":"2026-07-01T03:20:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/41929\/"},"modified":"2026-07-01T03:20:09","modified_gmt":"2026-07-01T03:20:09","slug":"chinese-ambassador-and-asio-trade-barbs-over-foreign-interference-allegations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/41929\/","title":{"rendered":"Chinese ambassador and ASIO trade barbs over foreign interference allegations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">China&#8217;s ambassador to Australia has attacked Australia&#8217;s domestic spy agency over allegations of foreign interference, warning it risks harming Australia-China relations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ambassador Xiao Qian has pointed to a video aired before a speech delivered by ASIO Director-General Mike Burgess last week as &#8220;casting aspersions&#8221; on China, prompting a sharp rebuke from the spy agency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In an opinion piece sent to Nine Newspapers, the ambassador also criticised a joint statement issued by Five Eyes spy agencies \u2014 from Australia, the UK, US, Canada and New Zealand \u2014 on the risk posed by Chinese intelligence services using sites such as LinkedIn to lure recruits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Xiao labelled the statement &#8220;slanderous&#8221; and said it &#8220;failed to find (or fabricate) any substantive evidence&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The ambassador was in attendance as Mr Burgess <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-24\/spy-chief-defends-resourcing-decisions-warns-of-threats\/106838338\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106838338\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">delivered his annual threat assessment<\/a> at the ASIO headquarters in Canberra last week, sitting in the second row during the address.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-04\/five-eyes-asio-warn-chinese-spies-linkedin-jobs-intelligence\/106757646\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Five Eyes warn of Chinese spies on LinkedIn <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Australia and its partners in the Five Eyes intelligence alliance warn that Chinese spies are using job platforms to post fake ads to lure recruits with access to sensitive information.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The speech itself, delivered in front of a mix of defence and national security officials, diplomats, journalists and others, did not mention China at any point.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But ahead of the speech, a video was played to the audience made up of news clips either featuring ASIO or covering events the agency was interested in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Media crews attending the event agreed to terms that the speech by Mr Burgess and subsequent question-and-answer session could be filmed, but not the video before the address.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The video was largely focused on antisemitism and the Bondi terror attack, while also covering issues including the return of &#8220;ISIS brides&#8221; to Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But the video also touched on issues of Chinese foreign interference, including the arrest of two Chinese nationals in Canberra accused of spying on the Canberra Buddhist association.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"ASIO director-general Mike Burgess delivering a speech.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/22ed3b6d7becaa6b47a7b5c07875d971.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Mike Burgess delivered his annual threat assessment last week. (ABC News: Che Chorley)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Those mentions have drawn the ire of Mr Xiao, who appeared to take particular issue with the mention of matters before the courts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Whilst relevant cases are still pending and facts have yet to be established, what harm will the broadcasting of such an official video cause to the individuals concerned?&#8221; he said in the opinion piece.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;What message will this one-sided information convey to the Australian public?
