{"id":42587,"date":"2026-07-02T02:20:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-02T02:20:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/42587\/"},"modified":"2026-07-02T02:20:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-02T02:20:10","slug":"great-koala-national-park-blamed-as-forestry-jobs-cut-in-sydney-coffs-harbour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/42587\/","title":{"rendered":"Great Koala National Park blamed as forestry jobs cut in Sydney, Coffs Harbour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Concerns about the sustainability of the New South Wales timber industry are growing, with the state&#8217;s Forestry Corporation announcing plans to axe more than 50 jobs across Coffs Harbour and Sydney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Forestry Corporation NSW (FCNSW) said a mix of 51 management, office and field-based roles would go in a decision which was &#8220;related to the impacts of the proposed Great Koala National Park (GKNP)&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The proposed GKNP will move management of 176,000 hectares from State forests to national parks and lead to reduced harvest volumes and operations,&#8221; FCNSW said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;These are predominantly on the north coast.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Looking upwards towards the canopy of a large tree.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/9da50ab658f6224ee6414095f5cac13e.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">There is a moratorium on logging in the area of the Great Koala National Park. (Supplied: NSW Government)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">NSW Nationals leader and Coffs Harbour MP Gurmesh Singh said the loss of 32 jobs in his electorate would have broad ramifications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;That&#8217;s less people coming into the CBD every day for coffees, for lunches; that obviously does have a flow-on effect for the rest of our economy,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;These are families that have been working in this area for quite some time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The decisions that the government has made over the last year or so have meant that this industry is potentially no longer viable here on the Mid North Coast.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Logging has been <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-07\/great-koala-national-park-to-go-ahead-on-nsw-mid-north-coast\/105743430\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105743430\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">suspended in the area of the proposed park since September<\/a> as the government works to introduce legislation to formally gazette the GKNP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It will run inland of Coffs Harbour, south to Kempsey and as far north as Grafton, and <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-07\/great-koala-national-park-to-go-ahead-on-nsw-mid-north-coast\/105743430\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105743430\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">will become the state&#8217;s largest national park at 476,000 hectares<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"view through fence of timber mill yard showing truck and wood.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/6465402efad9f31d0952a26c013dab5e.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">One of Pentarch Forestry&#8217;s mills at its Herons Creek site will close. (ABC Mid North Coast: Sophia McCaughan)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The cuts come as Pentarch announced it would slash 25 jobs and close one of its mills at Herons Creek, south-west of Port Macquarie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Director Steven Dadd said his operation had been relying on stockpiles, which had now run out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We haven&#8217;t had any wood supply coming in from Forest Corporation since last July, when the wood supply stopped,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Alternative employment<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A NSW government spokesperson said in a statement that it was working to move affected Forestry Corporation staff to suitable roles in the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It said creation of the GKNP would add 100 additional NPWS roles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Transition arrangements are being developed and there is a generous support package for workers who do not move into a role with FCNSW or NPWS,&#8221; the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The government did not respond to concerns raised about the future of the timber industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Legislation to gazette the Great Koala National Park by 2028 has not yet been introduced to state parliament.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A tree canopy. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/91e762ade574198bfe7e671f3762a30d.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The state government says the park will protect old growth forest and important water catchments.
