{"id":43371,"date":"2026-07-03T03:39:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-03T03:39:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/43371\/"},"modified":"2026-07-03T03:39:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-03T03:39:10","slug":"suspected-positive-h5-bird-flu-case-detected-in-nsw-and-wa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/43371\/","title":{"rendered":"Suspected positive H5 bird flu case detected in NSW and WA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">News South Wales has detected its first suspected case of H5 bird flu as another migratory bird in Western Australia has also tested positive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Samples were taken from a giant petrel near Hawks Nest on the NSW Mid North Coast that tested positive for the strain of influenza in preliminary testing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Another case of the infection is believed to have been identified in WA, with authorities confirming a suspected case in a dead giant petrel found near Mullaloo, in Perth&#8217;s north.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Samples from both animals have been sent to the CSIRO to confirm if it is the H5 high pathogenicity avian influenza, or bird flu, strain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">NSW Agricultural Minister Tara Moriarty said the bird was wild and had flown in from &#8220;other parts of the world&#8221;, identified by a member of public who noticed it was ill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We don&#8217;t know yet it if it is the worst strain of the virus,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Samples from the bird at NSW&#8217;s Bennetts Beach have been sent to the national testing lab in Geelong to determine the strain, after being assessed by vets and testing positive to H5 at an agricultural institute in Sydney&#8217;s Camden.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We expect to have the results of that at some point tomorrow,&#8221; Ms Moriarty said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The NSW government said it marked the first wild migratory seabird in the state to return a suspected positive result.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It is urging anyone who sees unusual deaths or illness in wild birds to avoid contact, record videos and pictures, and report to the Emergency Animal Disease hotline on 1800 675 888.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Tara Moriarty with long brunette hair, a navy blazer and bright blue top, speaking in front of a bush.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/a99dbc8b3b357890c693dbbf33484655.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Ms Moriarty says the commercial poultry industry has been informed. (ABC News: Alexander Lewis)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">WA Agriculture Minister Jackie Jarvis said after the latest suspected case a team of fisheries officers would now &#8220;conduct increased beach patrols along the metropolitan coast&#8221; to assist with surveillance.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is no evidence of spread or large-scale deaths in local wildlife or any detections in poultry,&#8221;  she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Testing in wetlands where waterfowl are known to gather will also be increased.<\/p>\n<p>Other cases in Australia<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The main symptoms are birds that look lethargic, showing respiratory signs of flu like watery eyes or difficulty breathing, or signs of paralysis and difficulty walking, NSW chief veterinary officer Jo Coombe said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It has had a devastating impact overseas.
