Where&#8217;s the air actually coming in and going out? (ABC\/Fremantle Media)<\/p>\n<p>Hire or borrow a thermal camera<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">If you&#8217;re still feeling chilly after trying the incense trick, it&#8217;s worth investigating where the cold spots are in your home, as they may be where you&#8217;re losing heat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;A lot of councils, through their local library networks, offer thermal cameras as a rental, or maybe just as a free service to ratepayers,&#8221; Mr Barnes says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;A thermal camera can really help you sort out where the issues are in your house \u2026 looking for the hot spots or the cold spots.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Like gaps in your ceiling insulation, he says, as an example.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;But you can use them all over the place, obviously.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Place rugs on floorboards<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">One place a thermal camera may find cold spots is the floor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;If you&#8217;ve got bare floors, rolling out rugs in winter does make a difference,&#8221; Mr Barnes says.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A loungeroom with a grey sofa, a indoor plant and thick rug cream, orange and rust tones.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/73facbee54ae9fa700894e0169a3741f.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Rugs can help plug draughts from gaps in floor boards and add an extra layer of insulation to your room. (ABC News: Lily Nothling)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Edwards says most homes have curtains or roller blinds, but many don&#8217;t have pelmets, which are frameworks placed above a window (often associated with traditional-looking curtains) that can help prevent heat loss.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Warm air naturally rises, but when it &#8220;cools down, it drops across the face of the window creating a nasty draught&#8221;, which the pelmet stops, she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Edwards says you can use a scarf or a piece of fabric to do the same job.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;After you close your curtains at night, lay that across the top of the curtain to create your own pelmet,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;You can also often create a pelmet out of cardboard, depending on the type of curtain rail.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Closeup of bubble wrap stuck to a window with the outside blurry.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/e4f485500fe4714af304f8b2e750b473.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Lining your windows with bubble wrap puts a buffer layer of air between you and the cold outside. Keeping the humans inside it warm is often cheaper and more efficient.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Anecdotally, people do swear by it. They do say it works,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s adding a three-dimensional air layer on top of the glass, which will provide some insulation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">If you have a little more cash to spend, magnetic window insulation is another option.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;You can get custom-made, magnetically held on layers, for example, which will provide summer and winter protection,&#8221; Mr Barnes says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I believe there are some DIY ones out there \u2026 or you can get a tradie to come in and do it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There&#8217;ll be a magnetic strip frame around the window itself, and then there&#8217;ll be one of these [plastic] sheets that you can \u2026 lock into place on a magnetic frame.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It provides a sort of double-glazing effect.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Turn on the fan \u2014 in reverse<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It might sound counterintuitive, but some ceiling fans can also help warm your home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;A lot of ceiling fans these days have a reverse mode, sometimes called the winter mode,&#8221; Mr Barnes says.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A close-up of a white ceiling fan with a switch on the side of the housing.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/fb62e54884d11b13d6c0e1e810785af4.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Reverse or winter mode is an increasingly common inclusion on ceiling fans. (ABC News: Jo Joyce)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Instead of blowing air down as your fan does in summer, reverse mode draws air up, mixes it with the warmer air that gathers at the top of the room.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It will help mix that \u2026 from the ceiling back down around the room without actually blowing a draught down on you,&#8221; Mr Barnes says.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re desperate for a heater<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">If you feel a heater is the only solution to ease the chill in your home, Mr Barnes says the running costs of reverse-cycle air conditioners are &#8220;always going to be cheaper in the long run than a portable electric heater or a gas heater&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But if the outlay is too much, or your landlord won&#8217;t install one, running a portable heater in the rooms you use is an option.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;If you&#8217;re looking at a portable electric heater \u2026 an oil column heater, typically, might be the go for a bedroom,&#8221; Mr Barnes says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They tend to be a bit cheaper to run.
