\"Starstruck<\/a>Melbourne has become the latest city to host Smithsonian Starstruck: An Immersive Experience<\/a>, a new walk-through attraction that transforms decades of astronomical research into an immersive journey across the universe.<\/p>\n

Now open to the public, the free-roam experience has been developed in collaboration with the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, translating real scientific data into an interactive exploration of space.<\/p>\n

Rather than observing the cosmos from afar, visitors are invited to step inside it, travelling through galaxies, witnessing the life cycle of stars and confronting the immense forces of a supermassive black hole.<\/p>\n

Guided by Astrid, the experience\u2019s virtual Cosmic Guide, the journey begins atop Mount Hopkins in Arizona at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory\u2019s Whipple Observatory before venturing deep into the universe.<\/p>\n

\"Smithsonian-Starstruck-2\"<\/a>Visitors drift through the iconic Hubble Deep Field in immersive 3D, explore the Milky Way and our place within it, and experience the power of the Sun through authentic NASA data that reveals its towering solar flares and even its subtle vibrations.<\/p>\n

The exhibition also ventures into some of astronomy\u2019s most intriguing frontiers. Guests travel to the extreme exoplanet Janssen, where molten lava and diamond-rich geology create an alien landscape, before witnessing the spectacular supernova of the red supergiant Betelgeuse.<\/p>\n

These moments illustrate one of astronomy\u2019s most profound truths: the elements forged in dying stars ultimately become the building blocks of new planets, future stars and life itself.<\/p>\n

Among the experience\u2019s most dramatic highlights is an encounter with Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the centre of the Milky Way. Standing at its edge offers a powerful reminder of the immense forces that continue to shape our galaxy.<\/p>\n

\"Smithsonian-Starstruck-1\"<\/a>Drawing on observational data from the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory alongside research from NASA, the European Space Agency and other leading scientific institutions, Smithsonian Starstruck combines scientific accuracy with large-scale digital storytelling. The result is an experience that makes complex astronomical concepts accessible while retaining a genuine sense of wonder.<\/p>\n

More than a showcase of spectacular imagery, Smithsonian Starstruck: An Immersive Experience celebrates humanity\u2019s ongoing pursuit of discovery. By placing visitors within the story of the cosmos \u2013 from the birth of stars to the vast architecture of distant galaxies \u2013 it offers a compelling reminder that we are not merely observers of the universe, but part of its continuing story.<\/p>\n

Developed in close collaboration with the Smithsonian Office of Visitor Accessibility, Starstruck incorporates accessibility features such as captions, visual descriptions, wheelchair-optimised viewing, assistive listening devices, complimentary companion access and monthly low-sensory days. Trained staff and fully accessible venues help ensure a welcoming experience for all.<\/p>\n
