(Supplied)<\/p>\n<p>Finding my voice<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">As a kid in the 1990s, I remember the Deadly Awards and the pride that came with seeing <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2014-07-16\/federal-government27s-finding-cut-to-deadly-awards-criticised\/5601672\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/5601672\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people recognised and celebrated for their achievements in music, sport, the arts and community leadership<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Much of my upbringing was also shaped by my mum&#8217;s involvement in community organisations and committees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Through that, I spent a lot of time around people who were working to create opportunities for Aboriginal people and strengthen communities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">One of those opportunities led me to the local Indigenous community radio station, where I first got involved in broadcasting.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"kids in front of computer smiling with headset on\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/a676470f7b928a6924acdea3015498be.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">ABC Kimberley&#8217;s Matt Francis (middle) says he always wanted to share his voice with his community. I saw the importance of Aboriginal people being able to tell their own stories, in their own voices, from their own perspectives. (Supplied: Matt Francis)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">I&#8217;m curious to explore what deadly means to mob around the country, how those meanings reflect the journey of the last 50 years and how they help others understand what Aboriginal people might mean when they use &#8220;deadly&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>What does &#8216;deadly&#8217; mean?<a href=\"https:\/\/iview.abc.net.au\/category\/indigenous\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NAIDOC Week 2026: 50 Years of Deadly<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The ABC has gathered the best First Nations films, TV shows and documentaries to enjoy during NAIDOC Week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Far from its standard English meaning of something that causes death, the adjective and adverb evokes pride and excitement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Glenys Dale Collard, a proud Nyungar woman who grew up in Western Australia&#8217;s South-West, said &#8220;deadly&#8221; was something positive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Inducted into WA&#8217;s Women&#8217;s Hall of Fame in 2025, Ms Collard has spent almost three decades working with Nyungar people and Aboriginal English, and has extensive knowledge in Indigenous language preservation and education.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For us, it&#8217;s not death. It&#8217;s one of the highest compliments, especially at footy, especially at our gatherings. It&#8217;s our elders continually passing down their stories and knowledge,&#8221; the Gamilaraay woman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Her community is also a source of pride, as is the Gomeroi\/Kamilaroi country she lives on.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve got the river systems, the sacred sites here, the mountain ranges with special significant stories,&#8221;  she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Further south in Albury, Masters Boxing Champion and Wiradjuri man Buddy Oldman said deadly was about strength.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Buddy a man with a matching tracksuit and Indigenous designs. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">When he&#8217;s not in the ring, he works to erase the stigma about men&#8217;s mental health and helps with suicide prevention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;[Deadly] gets said a lot to me because I do a lot with the boxing with the younger generation,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s also about courage.
