The New South Wales premier has pledged to revive train manufacturing in the state, earmarking two sites near Newcastle for a new factory.<\/p>\n

Premier Chris Minns made the announcement in a speech at the NSW Labor Conference at Sydney Town Hall on Saturday morning.<\/p>\n

He said the next set of trains would be manufactured “where the original fleet was built” in the state’s Hunter region, at either Teralba or Broadmeadow.<\/p>\n

“For generations, highly skilled Australian workers made our Tangaras, our red rattlers, our V Set, our S Set,” Mr Minns told the party’s rank-and-file.<\/p>\n

“All until 2012, when the last train rolled off the line at Broadmeadow, after being outsourced to China, Spain and South Korea.”<\/p>\n

In a separate statement, the government said $12 billion had been set aside for the project.<\/p>\n

A Palestinian flag with a sticker listing “Labor values” was unfurled from a balcony, as Mr Minns greeted the party faithful.<\/p>\n

Some delegates could be heard booing the protester, who was led away by police.<\/p>\n

In a statement, NSW Police said two men, aged 49 and 60, were issued with a move-on direction, and inquiries into the incident were ongoing.<\/p>\n

‘Taking control’<\/p>\n

Minister for Transport John Graham said the plan would create hundreds of jobs.<\/p>\n

“We are taking control of the process,” he said.<\/p>\n

“We’re expecting up to 780 workers in construction and 550 in ongoing jobs in the facility.”<\/p>\n

Mr Graham said he “couldn’t think of a better place” to revive the manufacturing of trains than near the original site where the Tangara was first built.<\/p>\n

“This will mean hundreds of jobs for the Hunter, both in the construction, but also then in the long-term manufacturing for those jobs,” he said.<\/p>\n

“It’s not just in those two areas, it’s also the long-term logistics chains that this will build.<\/p>\n

“We know we’ve got a number of those companies in the Hunter or in Western Sydney.”<\/p>\n

Funding questions<\/p>\n

The government had previously committed to start procuring the replacement of the ageing Tangara fleet by early 2027, with a “50 per cent local content target”.<\/p>\n

The $12 billion earmarked for the project would be spent over 15 years, but it was unclear where the funding would come from.<\/p>\n
