Sydney Mayor Clover Moore has decided to cancel the \u201cGlobalise the Intifada\u201d event on the first day of hearings at the Royal Commission into the Bondi terror attack.<\/p>\n

Ms Moore \u201cpulled the pin\u201d on the controversial event, which was set to take place in a government building on Tuesday night, blaming the media and its “discourse of division” for stopping the event.<\/p>\n

The event was advertised as \u201cwhy it’s right to say: globalize the Intifada\u201d.<\/p>\n

Due to \u201cgrave concerns\u201d from the Jewish community and mounting backlash from community leaders, as well as former prime minister Tony Abbott, Ms Moore caved to the pressure.<\/p>\n

According to The Daily Telegraph<\/a>, the forum was demanding the right to say the slogan \u201cGlobalise the Intifada\u201d after a NSW Parliamentary Inquiry recognized it as a call to violence against Jews.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Jewish Board of Deputies president\u00a0David Ossip said it was \u201centirely appropriate\u201d that the City of Sydney Council had refused to provide a venue for the event.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe mayor\u2019s decision is the right one, particularly in light of further inflammatory and dangerous social media activity today from one of the event\u2019s scheduled speakers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe phrase \u201cGlobalise the Intifada\u201d has been recognised by a NSW Parliamentary Inquiry as a call to violence against Jewish Australians. It essentially means kill or maim a Jew wherever you find one.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a statement, Ms Moore said her priority was to work to ensure everyone \u201cfeels welcome\u201d in Sydney.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat work has been all the more challenging as the impact of violence in the Middle East has left many hurting and afraid,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAntisemitism, Islmaophobia and anti-Palestinian racism has risen. Unthinkable evil terrorised Bondi.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ms Moore said she marched across the Harbour Bridge in support of \u201cpeople\u2019s rights\u201d and condemned the use of \u201cexcessive force\u201d used by NSW Police against protestors<\/a>.<\/p>\n

To support grieving communities, Ms Moore said she had visited mosques and synagogues, \u201cpaused Christmas celebrations\u201d, and used New Year\u2019s Eve to \u201cpromote reflection\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the first hearing block of the Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion in Australia, it is essential that public events do not contribute to hostility and fear,\u201d Ms Moore said.<\/p>\n

Ms Moore then blamed the media for pushing her to shut down the event which sought to call for violence against Jewish Australians.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn recent weeks, we have seen a persistent media campaign by the Murdoch media press against this event,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe coverage has exploited trauma, painting complex issues in black and white and, in bad faith, demanded our communities take sides.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ms Moore accused the media and certain outlets of engaging in a \u201cdiscourse of division\u201d which made her \u201cextremely concerned\u201d.<\/p>\n

Sky News host Sharri Markson congratulated The Daily Telegraph editor Ben English on the successful campaign against the event.<\/p>\n

Markson said Mayor Moore had \u201cresisted\u201d calls to cancel the event and that it took a \u201cdedicated campaign\u201d to change her mind on the \u201cdangerous\u201d slogan.<\/p>\n
