{"id":45996,"date":"2026-07-07T19:28:23","date_gmt":"2026-07-07T19:28:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/45996\/"},"modified":"2026-07-07T19:28:23","modified_gmt":"2026-07-07T19:28:23","slug":"misleadingly-named-labors-skilled-workforce-program-exposed-as-primary-workers-make-up-less-than-half-of-approvals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/45996\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Misleadingly named&#8217;: Labor&#8217;s skilled workforce program exposed as primary workers make up less than half of approvals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Labor\u2019s skilled migration system has been exposed after new analysis revealed that less than half of people granted visas last financial year were primary applicants assessed for their skills.<\/p>\n<p>Research by the Institute of Public Affairs has found that of the 185,001 permanent visas granted during 2024-25, a total of 132,148 were issued through the skilled migration stream.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, only 60,474 visas were granted to primary applicants assessed as skilled workers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The remaining visas were issued to partners, spouses and children who\u00a0accompanied\u00a0those migrants to Australia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Over the five years to June 2025, visas approved for family and other dependants totalled 594,470, of which 307,575 were chain permanent migrants under the skilled category.<\/p>\n<p>IPA research fellow Kevin You said the figures raised serious questions about how the program was presented to the public.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe federal government\u2019s misleadingly named Skilled Migration Program is just a visa approvals target that clearly prioritises chain migration over skilled migration,\u201d Mr You said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government\u2019s mass migration program has inflicted serious economic and social harm on mainstream Australians, all while telling them\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0to help the economy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFederal governments, under both major parties, have misled Australians into thinking that we have a skills-first migration system.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"poster-img\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/080f8b3b98bb4676d1dca94cdf0552dc.jpeg\" data-sctrack=\"op-poster-img\" alt=\"Labor's claims of 'historic low' migration figures are a 'load of rubbish\u2019\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt helps explain why no matter how much migration is increased our workforce is not getting any more skilled or productive.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While the program covers traditional shortage areas such as medicine,\u00a0engineering\u00a0and construction trades, it now includes 456 occupations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The list extends to professions including graphic designers, actors, advertising managers, public relations\u00a0advisers\u00a0and interior designers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One Nation says the latest figures showed the skilled migration program was failing to deliver what Australians had been promised.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The data confirms what has been known for some time: Labor&#8217;s immigration policy does not work in the national interest,&#8221; a One Nation spokesperson told SkyNews.com.au.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is not designed to meet our skills shortage, and only makes Australia&#8217;s housing crisis worse.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The debate follows broader concerns about migration settings and population growth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.skynews.com.au\/australia-news\/politics\/ridiculous-chalmers-touts-migration-fall-as-australia-adds-300000-overseas-arrivals-as-opposition-fires-back\/news-story\/0cdc7f83059c9ba1fe5e4c112c1cd2c2\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"0cdc7f83059c9ba1fe5e4c112c1cd2c2\" data-tgev-label=\"australia-news\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Recent Australian Bureau of Statistics data<\/a> showed Australia\u2019s population increased by 412,500 people over the year to reach 27.8 million.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Net overseas migration accounted for the overwhelming majority of that growth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Albanese government has repeatedly pointed to declining migration levels since the post-pandemic peak and argues its strategy is working.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Anthony Albanese recently said migration <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.skynews.com.au\/australia-news\/politics\/the-objective-is-working-albanese-defends-immigration-record-despite-repeatedly-missing-targets\/news-story\/d9d2d527ba514df8ce04159ae0cf0701\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"d9d2d527ba514df8ce04159ae0cf0701\" data-tgev-label=\"australia-news\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">had fallen\u00a0substantially from\u00a0its 2023 highs<\/a> and would continue to move towards Treasury\u2019s long-term projections.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe objective is working,\u201d\u00a0Mr\u00a0Albanese said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke has also argued migration has already been reduced significantly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;ve already got (immigration numbers) down 45 per cent from where they were, and as the budget papers make clear, we continue to get them lower,\u201d\u00a0Mr\u00a0Burke said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The government has consistently stated its goal is to bring net overseas migration closer to 225,000 people, although it has not achieved that target since taking office.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I<a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.skynews.com.au\/australia-news\/politics\/migration-unlikely-to-fall-further-as-labor-leans-on-population-growth-for-economic-strength-ipa-says\/news-story\/ca9a3dbc2957e8fb221a32531f8e4a03\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"ca9a3dbc2957e8fb221a32531f8e4a03\" data-tgev-label=\"australia-news\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nstitute of Public Affairs research fellow Saxon Davidson recently argued<\/a> migration numbers were unlikely to decline much further.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI suspect it won\u2019t,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParticularly because, when you look at our overall economic performance, the only reason that\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0not in an overall economic recession is because of these elevated migration numbers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the government will use that as a justification to continue these elevated levels of migration.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Coalition and One Nation have both made migration a major political issue, linking population growth to housing shortages and rising pressure on public services.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Opposition Leader Angus Taylor has proposed tighter migration controls.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year he pitched deporting tens of thousands of visa overstayers and to implement stricter, values-based entry conditions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Last month Mr Taylor told Sunday Agenda that immigration levels remain &#8220;way above&#8221; the government&#8217;s own targets.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;ve failed time and time again.\u00a0They&#8217;ve\u00a0missed every one of their targets.\u00a0We&#8217;ve\u00a0seen 1.4 million people coming in, in three and a half years,&#8221;
