{"id":47204,"date":"2026-07-09T07:17:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-09T07:17:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/47204\/"},"modified":"2026-07-09T07:17:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-09T07:17:10","slug":"landsdale-mp-daniel-pastorelli-gets-plum-wa-cabinet-spot-after-paul-papalia-resignation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/47204\/","title":{"rendered":"Landsdale MP Daniel Pastorelli gets plum WA cabinet spot after Paul Papalia resignation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The former right-hand man to Mark McGowan and Roger Cook has completed a meteoric rise through the ranks of WA Labor and is almost certain to become the state&#8217;s newest minister.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Multiple Labor sources have told the ABC first-term\u00a0Landsdale MP Daniel Pastorelli has been chosen to replace retiring stalwart Paul Papalia in cabinet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Papalia <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-07-06\/wa-minister-paul-papalia-resignation-from-politics\/106785902\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106785902\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced his resignation on Monday<\/a> to care for a seriously ill family member.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It threatened to spark a factional battle over his replacement, with Australian Manufacturing Workers Union secretary Steve McCartney taking to the state&#8217;s daily newspaper to call for his union&#8217;s pick, Kimberley MP Divina D&#8217;Anna, to get Mr Papalia&#8217;s spot in cabinet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But by early afternoon a deal had been done for Ms D&#8217;Anna to take Mr Pastorelli&#8217;s role as cabinet secretary, and for him to move into cabinet, which the ABC has been told was Premier Roger Cook&#8217;s preferred result.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Burswood Daniel\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/14138323d8800d00c17847d28fe11d6d.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Daniel Pastorelli was elected to parliament last year. (ABC News: Courtney Withers)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Pastorelli, who is on the right factionally, was elected to parliament just 16 months ago in the safe Labor seat of Landsdale and was quickly appointed cabinet secretary, a role often seen as a precursor to a seat in cabinet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The premier is expected to announce his portfolios, and any consequential changes to the ministry, in coming days.<\/p>\n<p>Pastorelli&#8217;s rapid ascent<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Pastorelli served as Mark McGowan&#8217;s communications director during his first term in government, before becoming his chief of staff from 2021 \u2014 a role he continued in when Mr Cook took over the top job in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">His rapid rise is likely to cause some tension within Labor&#8217;s 62-member caucus, but that could be offset by Mr Pastorelli&#8217;s appointment bringing the party&#8217;s right faction closer to a proportionate share of cabinet positions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Had she been appointed, Ms D&#8217;Anna, would have been the first Aboriginal woman to serve as a minister in WA.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Divina D'Anna\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/da8614ff42b55f1725ab225fc51a3d5d.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Kimberley MP Divina D&#8217;Anna had been in the running to get a seat in cabinet.
