A Sydney man has been charged over an alleged bomb threat targeting a foreign embassy in Australia.<\/p>\n
The AFP alleged the 47-year-old made an online threat to harm the diplomatic mission, prompting an investigation by its National Security Investigations team.<\/p>\n
Police executed a search warrant at the man’s Colyton home on Thursday where they suspect the threats were made from.<\/p>\n
They seized a mobile phone and about two grams of a white crystalline substance suspected to be methamphetamine.<\/p>\n
He was charged with using a carriage service to make a threat to cause serious harm, an offence carrying a maximum penalty of seven years’ imprisonment.<\/p>\n
The man is due to appear before Parramatta Local Court on Friday.<\/p>\n
AFP Detective Acting Inspector Joel Rivers said threats targeting diplomatic missions would not be tolerated and thoroughly investigated.<\/p>\n
“Embassies and consulates are locations of the highest importance and should be able to function without facing the threat of harm,” Det A\/Insp Rivers said.<\/p>\n
He warned people should not assume they were anonymous online.<\/p>\n
“People should not assume they are anonymous online or beyond the AFP’s reach,” he said.<\/p>\n
“The AFP has the means to identify those responsible and ensure they are brought before the courts.”<\/p>\n
