{"id":47940,"date":"2026-07-10T07:17:09","date_gmt":"2026-07-10T07:17:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/47940\/"},"modified":"2026-07-10T07:17:09","modified_gmt":"2026-07-10T07:17:09","slug":"victorian-crime-crisis-melbourne-branded-most-leavable-city-after-essendon-north-cafe-hit-in-night-of-terror","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/47940\/","title":{"rendered":"Victorian crime crisis: Melbourne branded \u2018most leavable city\u2019 after Essendon North cafe hit in \u2018night of terror\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Melbourne has been branded the \u201cmost leavable city\u201d after the state\u2019s crime crisis was highlighted by another \u201cnight of terror\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Eleven firebombings, ram raids and shootings have occurred in the Victorian capital since the start of the week, with the latest incident being a drive-by shooting in Melbourne\u2019s north-west.<\/p>\n<p>Four shots were fired into an Essendon North caf\u00e9 at about 2.45am on Friday, with CCTV footage showing the bullets smashing through a glass barrier as a white Toyota Kluger drives past.<\/p>\n<p>Police on patrol observed the shooting, sparking a pursuit by Victoria Police\u2019s Air Wing.<\/p>\n<p>After tracking the vehicle to Mahon Court in Taylors Lakes, police witnessed two individuals exit the vehicle before running into a property on Old Calder Highway.<\/p>\n<p>Police then arrested two men, aged 18 and 20.<\/p>\n<p>Caf\u00e9 owner Raymond Yacoub said he was glad police had arrested the men but he had no idea why his business was targeted.<\/p>\n<p>CCTV captures the moment if the shooting<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In 18 years I\u2019ve never had any issues,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo wake up to a call from a staff member saying we can\u2019t operate today, it\u2019s terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victorian Liberal MP Evan Mulholland said the incident was another example of the state\u2019s crime crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;ve seen another night of terror on our streets,\u201d Mr Mulholland said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have seen 11 firebombings, ram raids, or shootings since the start of this week, and we&#8217;ve got a premier in hiding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn&#8217;t have to be this way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When it was put to the MP that Melbourne has been ranked the world\u2019s third most liveable city, Mr Mulholland said the label was no longer accurate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s the most leavable city, to be honest,\u201d he said, adding that incidents like the Essendon North shooting affected small business owners and families alike.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s a nightmare for many families.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m going to the reopening, in a couple of weeks, of a cafe that was firebombed in Melbourne&#8217;s north. They&#8217;ve been out for over a year\u2026 not earning any income from their business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#8217;s affecting families, that&#8217;s affecting people that were employed by that business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s not just the owners, it&#8217;s the workers as well that are suffering under this government, under the lawlessness that has been created under the premier&#8217;s watch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictoria needs a fresh start.
