{"id":4836,"date":"2026-05-05T02:45:19","date_gmt":"2026-05-05T02:45:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/4836\/"},"modified":"2026-05-05T02:45:19","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T02:45:19","slug":"globalise-the-intifada-forum-relocated-to-darlington-park-after-council-cancels-booking-amid-backlash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/4836\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Globalise the Intifada\u2019 forum relocated to Darlington Park after council cancels booking amid backlash"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A controversial forum linked to the slogan \u201cGlobalise\u00a0the Intifada\u201d will\u00a0proceed\u00a0in Sydney on Tuesday night after\u00a0organisers\u00a0shifted the event to a new location.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The gathering was due to be held in a City of Sydney venue on Monday before it was cancelled by the council over concerns regarding community impact.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sydney Mayor Clover Moore pulled the pin on the controversial event, which was set to take place in a government building, blaming the media and its &#8220;discourse of division&#8221; for stopping the event.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The event was advertised as \u201cwhy it&#8217;s right to say: globalise the Intifada\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Activist group Stop\u00a0The\u00a0War\u00a0On\u00a0Palestine confirmed the event would now take place outdoors at Charles Kernan Reserve in Darlington, near Redfern Station.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The forum is scheduled to begin at\u00a06pm.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVenue cancelled but\u00a0forum\u00a0is going\u00a0ahead,\u201d the group said in an Instagram post.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Organisers\u00a0pushed back on the council\u2019s decision, arguing their event does not pose a threat to public safety.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe reject the implication \u2026 that our meeting risks public safety and respect for members of the community,\u201d the group said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They also\u00a0criticised\u00a0media coverage of the event and its messaging.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Organisers rejected the characterisation that the event is linked to violence against Jewish people.<\/p>\n<p>They said the phrase has been misunderstood, describing it as \u201ca call to end the violence of Israel\u2019s occupation\u201d rather than an endorsement of harm.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The group also took aim at NSW Premier Chris Minns, who has previously condemned the slogan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They labelled his position a \u201cbaseless smear\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Due to \u201cgrave concerns\u201d from the Jewish community and mounting backlash from community leaders, as well as former prime minister Tony Abbott, the\u00a0City of Sydney withdrew its venue booking.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They\u00a0cited\u00a0concerns\u00a0that\u00a0the event could \u201ccontribute to hostility and fear\u201d within the community.<\/p>\n<p>Jewish Board of Deputies president\u00a0David Ossip said it was \u201centirely appropriate\u201d that the City of Sydney Council had refused to provide a venue for the event.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe mayor\u2019s decision is the right one, particularly in light of further inflammatory and dangerous social media activity today from one of the event\u2019s scheduled speakers,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe phrase \u201cGlobalise\u00a0the Intifada\u201d has been\u00a0recognised\u00a0by\u00a0a\u00a0NSW Parliamentary Inquiry as a call to violence against Jewish Australians.
