Perth\u2019s southern suburbs have been revealed as some of the top spots in WA for small business growth.<\/p>\n

New data from the Small Business Development Corporation showed more than 30,000 new sole traders and small businesses formed across WA between 2020 and 2025.<\/p>\n

Canning and Gosnells both cracked the top five, launching 2250 and 2920 new businesses across the two cities respectively. The City of Armadale followed close behind in sixth place with 1910 new small businesses, and Cockburn came next with 1650.<\/p>\n

The business offers premium hair extensions and wigs designed to be affordable, and Ms Suttie-Norwood said it took a lot of work to get to where she is today.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor two years, it was just me at home, or me at the markets every Sunday at Canning Vale at 4am, dragging the kids down there. Everyone used to laugh at me, but it just took off on marketplace,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was sick of paying $800 to $1000 for nice, long hair, especially being mixed. I wanted something that was quick and easy, but still felt food. I didn\u2019t want it to be Shein rubbish, I wanted to be that middle person.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since then, she has participated in several pop-ups at the Perth Royal Show, Westfield Carousel and Every Woman Expo, hired a team of 12 professionals and bought a shopfront in Canning Vale last year.<\/p>\n

Bad & Boujee Hair also now offers wholesale products across Australia.<\/p>\n

Ms Suttie-Norwood said she was able to develop her brand with support from the SBDC, despite her lack of experience owning a business.<\/p>\n

\u201cI first used them when I opened, and they helped me define roles. At the beginning, I had no business knowledge, so they helped me learn what I should be doing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The SBDC provides State Government-funded services to support emerging businesses with advice, skills workshops and dispute resolution.<\/p>\n

Ms Suttie-Norwood used them for support with tax filing, organising lease terms for her shop, employment and contract negotiation. The SBDC also guided her through a Fair Work audit after a hiring misunderstanding, ensuring she was compliant.<\/p>\n

She also participated in business programs facilitated by the City of Canning, which she said was critical in growing her business.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really leant on the City of Canning, and I ring William Barry (the city\u2019s principal economic advisor) with all my problems in the small business,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

He advised her to utilise the Canning Plus Eight Sprint, a free six-week skill building and business growth program run as part of the Canning Business Mentoring Program.<\/p>\n

She finished second in the program, and received a paid mentor for extra support.<\/p>\n

Despite the significant business growth, Ms Suttie-Norwood has been hit with cost of living pressures that recently forced her to move the shop back to a home studio, and downsize on staffing.<\/p>\n

Support from the SBDC allowed her to be adaptable, and she has plans to reopen a shop on Cecil Avenue in the next few months.<\/p>\n

\u201cRight now I have three staff, and I gave them the opportunity to open their own businesses out of my house. One does make-up as well as work for me, the other one does spray tanning and she\u2019s just started her own lip business,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of people don\u2019t start businesses or they give up when the economy\u2019s tough, whereas I\u2019ll just keep going.\u201d<\/p>\n

WA now houses almost 258,000 small business and sole traders, representing 97 per cent of all businesses in the State. The population is also expected to increase from approximately 3.1 million to 3.6 million over the next 10 years.<\/p>\n

WA small business commissioner Saj Abdoolakhan said as the population continues to grow, so will the demand for small businesses.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis new research demonstrates that many of WA\u2019s entrepreneurs are choosing to create their own businesses in the communities where they live, contributing to the local economy and providing essential services to the community,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
