Each train consists of three railcars, which were shipped separately by sea on a journey that typically takes between 45 and 61 days.

Upon arrival at Port Kembla in New South Wales, the railcars were transported individually to the new maintenance and storage facility in Orchard Hills, where the trains were assembled.

Modern Trains Tailored for Airport Traffic

The new trains are designed to accommodate high passenger volumes, particularly passengers with luggage. Key features include wider center aisles—approximately 30 cm wider than those on existing trains—dedicated luggage storage spaces under the seats, and high-resolution screens displaying flight information, directly connected to the airport’s systems.

Each train has 194 seats and a capacity of 645 passengers. The interior layout offers several types of seating, including group seating arrangements, as well as accessible areas for people with limited mobility, wheelchair spaces, hearing loop systems, and dedicated bicycle spaces.

A distinctive feature is the upholstery design, created by Dharug artists, which reflects the cultural connection to the land and water, inspired by traditional routes and journeys.

The Sydney Metro–Western Sydney Airport project is being carried out by the Parklife Metro consortium, which includes Plenary Group, Webuild, Siemens, and RATP Dev. The contract covers the delivery of trains and digital infrastructure, as well as the operation and maintenance of the system.

Siemens Mobility will supply a total of 12 driverless trains, as well as signaling, electrification, telecommunications, and digital infrastructure systems. The company will also provide maintenance for 15 years, using the Railigent X digital platform to manage the rolling stock fleet.

The new line, 23 km long with six stations, will connect St. Marys to the new Western Sydney Airport and Bradfield City Centre, becoming the region’s main transportation corridor. The project marks Siemens Mobility’s first public-private partnership and first “turnkey” contract in Australia.

The trains are part of the Inspiro platform and incorporate advanced digital technologies, fully automated operation, and predictive maintenance systems. The interior design is focused on comfort and efficiency, featuring high-performance climate control, noise reduction, and multifunctional spaces tailored to passengers’ needs.

Share on:
