{"id":48876,"date":"2026-07-12T07:09:18","date_gmt":"2026-07-12T07:09:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/48876\/"},"modified":"2026-07-12T07:09:18","modified_gmt":"2026-07-12T07:09:18","slug":"southeast-braced-for-wild-weather-as-freezing-temperatures-and-major-snowfalls-hit-ski-fields","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/48876\/","title":{"rendered":"Southeast braced for wild weather as freezing temperatures and major snowfalls hit ski fields"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A powerful cold front sweeping across southeast Australia will deliver a day of heavy rain,\u00a0strong winds\u00a0and plunging temperatures on Sunday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The system has already pushed across South Australia and will continue moving east, bringing widespread showers, damaging winds and fresh snowfall to alpine regions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The system\u00a0is\u00a0being driven by a deep\u00a0low-pressure\u00a0system over the Southern Ocean.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rain that crossed Adelaide on Saturday will spread across Victoria before extending into Tasmania and eastern New South Wales during Sunday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While rain will be widespread, forecasters are also closely\u00a0monitoring\u00a0damaging winds expected to accompany the front.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Wind warnings\u00a0remain\u00a0in place across the New South Wales ski resorts, where gusts of up to 110km\/h are forecast above 1,900 metres.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Victorian alpine areas are also expected to experience wind gusts of around 100km\/h.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The state will also stay wet and cool, with Melbourne expected to reach 14C.<\/p>\n<p>South Australia will remain unsettled throughout Sunday, with showers continuing across the agricultural districts, including Adelaide, where temperatures are forecast to reach just 14C.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tasmania is forecast to\u00a0bear the brunt of\u00a0the system, with heavy showers continuing across western parts of the state and windy conditions extending statewide.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hobart is expected to reach 11C, although rainfall there is forecast to be lighter than in the west.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>New South Wales will see showers across the ranges and adjacent slopes, with isolated showers elsewhere in the south and east.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Snow showers are forecast above 1,000 metres across the southern ranges, while patchy morning frost is expected in alpine districts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Temperatures will remain below average across much of the state, with Wagga Wagga forecast to reach 12C and Goulburn just 8C.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite the\u00a0cold conditions, there is welcome news for Australia&#8217;s ski fields after a slow start to the snow season.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Earlier forecasts suggested 10 to 15 centimetres of fresh snow, but much larger totals are now expected between Sunday afternoon and\u00a0into\u00a0Tuesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Perisher is forecast to receive up to 40 centimetres of snow, while Falls Creek could record as much as 57 centimetres.<\/p>\n<p>Snow is also expected to fall to low-lying areas of Tasmania.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, conditions will be\u00a0considerably more\u00a0settled.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Queensland is forecast to enjoy mostly fine weather, particularly across southern and western districts, although isolated showers and morning fog are possible along parts of the east coast between Innisfail and Bundaberg.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Gold Coast is expected to reach a pleasant 24C.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Northern Territory will remain sunny and dry, with Darwin forecast to reach 32C and Uluru 19C under mostly fine skies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Western Australia will see showers continue along the southern coastline, including Albany,\u00a0Esperance\u00a0and Margaret River, while Perth is forecast to remain partly cloudy and dry with a top of 19C.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Further north, Port Hedland is expected to reach a warm 30C under sunny skies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Forecasts across the nation\u00a0Sydney\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sydney will see cooler conditions on Sunday as the cold front pushes into eastern New South Wales.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Showers are expected across parts of the ranges and adjacent slopes, with isolated showers possible elsewhere in the south and east. Temperatures will reach a top of 17C.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Melbourne\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Melbourne is set for a cold and windy Sunday as the system continues to move across Victoria.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Showers will persist across the state, with conditions feeling colder than the forecast temperature suggests.
