(ABC News: Hamish Harty)<\/p>\n<p>Environmental concerns<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The use of natural gas has environmental groups worried and Greenpeace Australia calling for a pause on data centres until a review of legislation is completed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-18\/data-centre-boom-sparks-warning-to-consider-climate-change\/106799658\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Is Australia prepared for the data centre boom?<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">As data centres rapidly come online to meet demand, governments are urged to ensure development does not outpace adequate planning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Greenpeace campaigner Solaye Snider said the &#8220;frenzy&#8221; of development in Australia could derail the country&#8217;s transition to renewable energy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-27\/ai-data-centres-pressuring-energy-transition-greenpeace-says\/106722390\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106722390\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recent analysis<\/a> co-authored by Ms Snider claimed data centres could account for 13 per cent of total national electricity demand by 2040.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;These new hyperscale proposals just need unprecedented amounts of energy, and so they&#8217;re almost always turning to gas or fossil fuels in some way,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Greenpeace&#8217;s report also described the amount of water used by data centres as &#8220;dizzying&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A proposed gigawatt-scale data centre in the NT&#8217;s Barkly region would use up to 4 gigalitres of water each year, which is more than greater Darwin uses in a month, according to NT Power and Water Corporation data.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-07-01\/data-centre-planned-outback-nt\/106862398\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;Hyperscale&#8217; data centre plans in NT<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The proposed 19,150-hectare &#8216;Project Ares&#8217; would be built by Energy North on Murranji Station in the Barkly Region, as up to 12 proponents eye the NT for data centres.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Meanwhile, Sydney Water, Australia&#8217;s largest water utility, expects data centres to represent a quarter of Sydney&#8217;s total annual water use by 2035.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Snider said a lack of &#8220;binding regulations&#8221;
